Misting Feeders

Pipin my Senegal just had his first shed and had been basking all day and not drinking much. I figured after all the hard work of getting that old skin off he would be thirsty and hungry so I gave him an extra long mist session and he did drink. Then I when I fed him I misted the crickets and got them all wet to add a little extra hydration.

Is it a good idea to get the crickets good and wet to aid when hydration is required or is there some reason this is bad that I don't understand?

Well, a few wet crickets isnt going to hurt any cham.
You wouldnt want to do it all the time, and have it interfere with your dusting schedule, but a few here and there will not be an issue.

Wet crickets, rolled in supplement powder however, is an issue;)

I don't dust with every feeding I really don't think it is necessary with really well fed gut loaded crickets. The place I get m crickets from literally has the fattest crickets I've ever seen and I had 20 of them eat half a carrot an apple slice and some green leaf lettuce nearly entirely in a week.

But you're right I probably should have done the calcium instead of the misting...

I vitamin dust weekly, calcium with D3 monthly and calcium twice a week. I use repti cal brand stuff except the D3 is Flukers. Pipin doesn't eat a lot either. He will generally only eat one cricket a day, sometimes 2, rarely 3. I offer them every 20 minute until he stops eating and will generally let 1 or 2 smaller ones free range in his enclosure until lights out. My wife also feeds him wax worms about 1 every other day or so.

Maybe Karma can correct me if Im wrong, as I have never kept a senegal, but...

I think they are the same as panthers and veileds with supplements.
Supplements should be:
Plain calcium with no D3 or Phos. everyday.
Calcium with D3 twice a month.
Multivitamin twice a month.

So he may be getting much more vitamins than he needs.

I would stop all multivitamin for about a month.
This will give him time to rebalance.

Also, carrots, apples, and greens, are not that great of a gutload, so I would definitely dust regularly.

Here is sandrachameleons blog on gutloading:https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/575-january-2012-dry-gutload-recipe.html

I also use a dry gut load but I guess I was wrong when I thought it was good compared to the one on sandrachameleon's blog the one I use is sad and won't even go into details.

From everything I've read Senegal care is very similar to Veiled except just weight and size proportional.

I will lay off on the vitamin dusting and increase the D3 dusting as you suggest, and I suppose I can increase the regular calcium. I laid off because he never takes a second cricket when the first has calcium dust on it.

Thank you!

It always amazes me how nice and helpful everyone on this forum is, love it!

Thanks! Im glad you feel that way;)

I was super ashamed of my gutloading when I read her blog:eek:

It has really helped me to improve it though.
I would also recommend checking out dino-fuel.
Its pretty awesome stuff, and is a great addition to a gutload.

Ive heard of them not liking the dusting on the feeders.
I believe Repashy Calcium Plus could help with this, as it smells great, and they seem to like the taste.

Rep-Cal products are good products though, and I use them on my jackson. If they dont like the taste, they will get used to it.;)

My wife also feeds him wax worms about 1 every other day or so.

I'm still a total cham noob, but I learned an interesting tidbit from someone on waxworms today. Waxworms have a lot of phosphorous which can cancel out calcium absorption. and because your not dusting everyday with calcium getting 1-2 waxworms a day can be a problem.

To help with hydration.. HORNWORMS!

lol, big fat juicy caterpillars that are great for helping a dehdyrated chammie, or just to help up water intakeafter a shed.

Sadly I couldn't just run up the street and get any hornworms.

I'm trying to setup a bug pantry so the bugs will be separate from the living room where they are now causing problems. Plus I just need more insectivorous animals to take help eat up the bugs before they die.

Ideally I will just have breeding colonies of all my feeders but that is in the future...

It sounds like I need to get some Calcium Plus. Hopefully Pipin will like it more than the Rep-Cal stuff I'm using.
