Being on isn't the issue... being on the side of the cage is my concern ;):D

You should move them to the top of the cage. Imagine driving your car east on a highway and not having a sun visor to block it out.... Doesn't feel so good and ya can't see well.... sorta like the picture:eek:.

I just took these to give you an example... This is my female Veiled's cage, Caddie. She was under the light at first but started to wander off when she saw the flash go off for the first couple of pics (didn't work well with flash)

oh right i'm with you.i had it on the top but when i showed my vet the set up he said it would be better on the side

Is ur vet a herp specialist? I have never heard of it being recommened on the side (kinda like for the reasons summoner12 said!!

With all due respect to your vet,
That is only true in the world where the sun is shinning from the side instead of above.

The whole reason why we tend to put our lights on the top is to mimic the real sun and the way chameleon do thermo-regulation (going up and down).
When they get too hot, they venture closer to the bottom and when they need heat they go up to get closer to the sun.

yeah i understand that. the light is still near the heat source and has no bearing on the thermo regulation it is in order for him to benefit from the uvb/uva light everywhere in the enclosure

oh yes he comes very highly recomended has all the certificates i'd trust his word everytime,
you can check out his website here

very interesting.
My simple reasoning is when your cham needs to hide from UV (and i think, it is only befitting to trust more on your cham's 'instinct' on vit D3 production in his own body), he instinctively will hide and go down.

It's a bit "unnatural" for your chameleon to go to the "right" to escape..
Plus, the nature of most chameleon's cage (with it being taller than wider), going down will allow your cham to escape from more heat and uvb than going to the right/ left.

But, hey, I am not a vet. Perhaps, your vet knows something more than I do.
Let us know, if it actually work better than putting the lights on top.
Did your vet tell you why he prefer having the light on the side?

A chameleon will know when it needs UVB/UVA and move accordingly...... He determines this by using his third eye (parietal eye). It is convenient that it is on TOP of his head.... sorta like the sun is on top of him... and so are his lights.

Your cham will know what is best. Placing the lights on top side by side (heat next to the UVB) will work well for him to make the right decision on how close or far to be from the light for his own vid D production.

now thats something i didn't know so i've learned something valuable on that note thanks:D

Mista seems to like it being there he has room to get away from the light further down his enclosure which he does throughout the day.The reasoning was that he spends a lot of his time mooching about the middle and he still benefits from the light.
i'm not saying i am right or wrong just doing what i'm advised but i am open to all advice so thanks guys

If he is hanging around the middle of the cage the temps might be a little high for him. what wattage lamp are you using in the heat lamp?

he has a 75 wattage bulb keeping his basking spot an average of 85-90 any higher and he gapes.
lower region temps are average of 60-70
he is up and down all day going to his basking spot when he needs to and lower when he needs to cool down

I would step it down to a 50w maybe 60w lamp and see how his movements change. I bet he'll stay higher up in the cage and then you won't need the UVB lamp on the side of the cage.
