Is the miracle grow perlite proven to be harmful to egg incubation or is it just said so because it has nitrogen in it.

You can proof it for us if you want, and get the facts. And let us know what happened a few months down the road. I'm guessing in the organic form, you might grow some, cha cha cha chia eggs. :D

Does the miracle gro perlite have... miracle gro in it? If it has any sort of fertilizers it is not good for incubation...

I honestly would not suggest perlite. I have had great success with vermiculite (not the small, clay-like form) and others have had success with Hatch rite. Pangea, a site sponsor sells hatch rite.

I'll post a link in a minute.

EDIT: I am getting things so confused. With 90,000 names for everything I meant to say SuperHatch.

However if you want to look into different hatching mediums, here you go.

I have some experience with this product.
Yes, it does have fertilizer.

A year or two ago I set a few hundred eggs (mostly bearded dragons) in this stuff before I noticed that it contained fertilizer.

By the time I noticed the product contained fertilizer (could have sworn I checked carefully at the store to see if it had fertilizer- imagine my shock and panic when I learned it contained fertilizer after all!), I had eggs in all stages of development from recently laid to nearly finished incubating.

I switched products and re-set the eggs as soon as I could find another brand- not easy in my area as apparently Miracle Grow has a monopoly on the market with all the chain stores here- walmart, lowes, home depot, etc only offered the miracle grow. So finally a day or two later I located some normal perlite in a mom and pop nursery about 40 minutes from here.

After resetting the eggs and finishing out incubation, I don't think it had much effect on the hatchlings- except for one- a very high male count- very few females in the few clutches that had stayed in the miracle grow product the longest. My first clutch contained 100% males (I know because I held them back to make picks for future breeding). That has never occurred in any clutch of bearded dragons that I have hatched since 1994.

At the time, I did find other people online who had incubated and hatched out baby lizards in the stuff as well, reporting no problems.

I also found a post somewhere where someone who looked like he knew what he was talking about claimed the stuff should be lethal because of the percentages of the particular chemical or chemicals used in the product.

I would recommend avoiding the product.

I am useing hatchrite but i was just curious if it really is a problem, thanks syn i will try that superhatch in the future.

Short answer, yes. It is a problem.

I also know some people try .. oh what is it, peat moss? Sphagnum moss? Some sort of moss.. all natural. Hopefully someone who uses it will let you know.
