Might have to sell my Cham.

Ok, this is one of the few forums I am on where I can rant and not get bashed. Hey and it has to do with Chams too.

So my wife and I just moved to a new apt. We have downsized at the new apt. It is ~150sq feet smaller. I love my Cham. His name is Doro Orana, or Burning Rain in English, but we just call him Jack Jack. I purchased him from the Kammers in January. He is beautiful, has his own personality, and yes I do take advantage of the fact that he is basically self contained and a piece of furniture. All I have to do is feed him every other day and make sure he has water in his 5 gal. bucket and get rid of the dirty water once a week.

Issue one. My landlord does not allow (water furniture) in his apartments.
My fix, plumb the lines to the back yard. But how. Can't make any holes.

Issue two, if I can solve issue one, then the second issue is space. And the fact that their will be gallons of water in the lines running to Jacks cage. No way to fix this as I have no space.

Constructive idea number one. How can I put Jack Jacks cage outside and make it weather proof.

As of now, his cage consists of a 2x2x4 DIY cage with a shower curtains around the back half to keep in the moisture. A 60watt light bulb for heat and light durring the day. Two 18" halagen 5.0 bulbs. A ceramic heater if the temperature drops below 60* at night.

I live in Montrose, Ca. Basically La Cresenta. We get a cool breeze most nights and summers are worm with a cold summer night not getting much below 60* unless their is a storm. But winter nights average 50* and as low as 30* sometimes. And storms bring even colder nights.

Any constructive thoughts? Or should I do what is good for him and re home him? I would have to meet the person and they would have to sign a contract with me that under no circumstances would they sell, give, donate or re home him. They would have to pay me a re homing fee. If they were unable to care for him they would have to give him back to me free of charge, also the same applies if they neglect him. I would also need updates on him and would have to check on him untill I were comfterable (spelling) with them.

Concerned parent that hates to give away his babys.

How does a chameleon constitute as water furniture? I get that you have 5 gallons of water, but did the landlord actually say he/she considers it water furniture? I thought that rule was for water beds.

what are you using the 5 gallon bucket for? Why not get a one gallon dripper and set that on the top of cage for watering purposes? The whole thing does not make much sense to me, unless I am misunderstanding something here.

I'm assuming it's the reservoir for a misting system. Hey you could always get rid of it and go back to hand misting! :p

i dont know how your contract would work. how could you sell it and tell someone they cant give it away/donate or resell it? and they would HAVE to give it back to you free of charge? i dont know, that whole last part just rubs me the wrong way. if you cant keep it then how would you take it back anyways? if they neglect him... they would also neglect telling you about it..selling and giving away arent the same thing.

HOWEVER - i do hope you figure something out so you can keep him. chameleons are animals/pets, not furniture. if you have a misting system and thats the problem, then just get rid of the misting system and hand mist, or maybe you could fit him in the bathroom if its a big enough bathroom? if you can have pets, i think you should be able to keep him no problem.

My idea is to put some form of sump pump in the drain, you could use another pump similar to the mist system, and some 1/4 inch tubing out a window screen or something similar. 1 bucket gone. You could do something similar to the ice maker in your fridge, run another 1/4 inch tube from under your sink, to a smaller resivor under the cage with a float type stop valve. This would take a little bit of plumbing and imagination, but you would still have the outcome you both want.

Good luck.

jlemond, I don't see any reason Jack Jack's primary habitat cannot be outdoors. I don't even think you need to make it "weather proof". I honestly think your biggest problems are going to be: a) keeping him cool enough in the summer and b) keeping him warm enough at night.

You'll could probably use a short soaker hose to keep water dripping into the cage during the day. You'll need to make sure he always has access to shade (not hard).

You might just want to bring him in at night. As you don't need a lot of water during the night hours, that should work out well.

First off, yeas the bucket is for a resavour. Second I can and will down grade the size of resavour. Third, hand misting would be very difficult as I work 12+ hrs a day. As much as I love my wife, she would forget to hand mist Jack sevral times a day. And Jack Jack is not furniture, his cage is.

I have permission for Jack Jack as a pet, my land Lorien just does not know about the water part of his cage. I just have to figure out a way to have the water supply outside and I think everything will be fine.

Habba Mist

You might want to invest in a small automatic mister anywhere from 50-70 bucks. the mister can be hung in the back potion of the cage, has about a one quart reservior and you can fill it every other day. Hope this helps.
