My theory is that he may be "tasting" her pheramones to see if she is still receptive? Don't wanna risk jumping straight into it if there is a risk of being thrown from the branch and potentially being injured. So "tasting" allows for a quick get away if needed. That's just my thoughts. Maybe right, maybe wrong, but it makes sense to me.
