Also, the bottle of Baytril says 22.5mg/mL of Baytril per dose.

I'm reading it right off the bottle, so hopefully there is no error on the vet's math. The bottom of the bottle says 22.5mg/mL and I'm giving him 1.6mL per day, per 10 days as prescribed. Tomorrow will be day 5 of the treatment.

if he is 350g, that’s 0.35kg. X 10mg/kg dose=3.5mg/dose. at 22.5mg/ml concentration that should be 0.15ml total per dose.
if your vet diluted it by 10x then you’re fine. if he didn’t, you are overdosing by 10x. need to get those answers before you dose him again!

twice daily dosing is silly in chams anyway. it does NOT say anywhere i can see on that label that it was diluted. it may have been, but i don’t see it.

I'll call the vet in the morning. I'm positive they diluted it with a piña colada flavor, they asked me if it was ok as a flavor.

I spoke with the vet this morning, and she confirmed its a 10x dilution. So after 4 days should I give him a 48hr break, and cut the dose in half?

happy to hear that!! I was getting concerned that he was being way overdosed!
I can't advise you to go against your prescribed orders. it is absolutely unethical and illegal. textbooks certainly back up your current regimen, my opinion differs with certain species. if he is continuing to get better as you mentioned and isn't getting sicker, it may be foolish to change anything. wish you were closer!

Well the melleri is doing much better. Still very aggressive, and stays dark most of the day, but hes very active, and eats well. He has 2 more days left of the Baytril. I've was surprised to see him, literally run to the center of the free range when the misters go off. He now almost has the times memorized, because he will start to head to the middle of the plants under the misters within 30min of them going off.
I found the initial cause of his eye infection today as well. He had a huge chunk of shedded skin in his turret. I saw a small piece of it sticking out so I gently grabbed it with tweezers and removed it. He's been trying to clear his eye since I received him, and rubbing it on branches. I was concerned there was something in his turret initially, so I gave him daily saline washes for a few days. After that didn't seem to help, I just assumed it was the infection causing the discomfort until he finally got the shed loose today to my relief.

that's great news! some of the Baytril haters might learn something from this. he is on what some would consider a high/frequent dose and appears to be greatly improved.
great job on getting the debris out. you could have thrown antibiotics at that for a year with no success; a thorough flush of the turret and nasolarcrimal duct is always my initial step. foreign body in the turret is generally much more likely than a bacterial infection.

Well apparently he's feeling really good, because I just walked in and caught him trying to mount my other melleri, who wasn't very thrilled about it. Lol So I'm assuming now that I might definitely have a male and a female.

Argh, his infection has come back. He's starting to shut one eye again, and I can hear him wheeze occasionally. He's mildly dehydrated as well, so I've been giving him 2ml of Pedialyte 3 times a day orally. He will bask under the misters, and put his head up as if he's enjoying it, but I don't see him drink. Dr. O, what do you suggest I do? His weight is staying relatively the same, he's 346g, and was 350g two weeks ago. How long do I let his liver recover before starting another antibiotic? Would a different antibiotic possibly more effective in your educated guess? He's eating, though not on his own as far as I can tell. I have fresh feeders out in cups everyday, and I can't tell if the female is eating all of them, or if he eats some as well. I'm hand feeding him by dropping feeders into his mouth when he gapes at me. As long as I step out of his field of view, he'll chew them right up and swallow them. He's still full of energy, and has a very strong grip, and can still bite very hard. lol.

keeping hydration up rarely goes wrong, so the Pedialyte should be fine. and certainly if he’s eating what you’re placing in his mouth, keep that up! that’s all good.
re: meds, i would advise a client w/ this situation that a lung wash and culture/sensitivity of the collected fluid is likely the best step to figure out what bacteria are doing this (if any), and which antibiotic works best for that species. from lots of experience, often the bacteria may be dead and gone but the inflammation or damage to the resp. tissues continues. there’s really no way to tell other than a wash, and if it were my cham i would certainly be running basic bloodwork as well w/ the prior/current infection and Baytril that was given. washes are relatively simple procedures that can produce wonderful information; it will likely cost a few hundred between the procedure/sedation/and mostly lab fees.

Ok, thanks for the advice. The pedialyte seems to really improving his overall health/mood. He's definately more active. I think he's been getting very dehydrated, based on his apperarance, but his urates are white, with no orange, and he passes a large amount of mucus with his feces. His skin is what appears dehydrated. If I pinch it together, the fold stays there. This is what caused me to start the pedialyte.
Im using new Pedialyte advanced, it has "prebiotics" in it, which I'm assuming is acedopholus, because it says it contains milk products on the label. I'm hoping it helps to re-establish his digestive bacteria that may have been lost due to the Baytril.
We're in the middle of a bad snow storm right now, once it clears, I may try to find a reptile vet in Indianapolis or Chicago to do the lung wash. I'm hoping that getting him very hydrated will help to clear up the remaining infection/inflamation.
