Meller Chameleon Horn

I got a Mellers Chameleon and he has his horn bent and broken, I was wondering what I should do about it ! He doesn't have any issues with eating but the horn is still attached and his under lip is a dark brown. Should I take him to the vet to have them remove it or will it heal and fall off on its own, and is the coloring on his mouth worrisome ?

This is a very common injury on imported chams. Help protect the injured tissue from secondary infection by dabbing some Polysporin (OTC, no pain relieving ingredients) on the rubbed or scabbed area. The horn will probably fall off it it hasn't already. It won't re-grow.

Okay, thank you ! His horn is still attached but he doesn't seemed bothered by it and I don't think it is causing him any discomfort, and I am aware it won't grow back.. Thanks !

I always hate when they come in with horn injuries like that. It just looks bothersome. Have you kept this species before?

No I haven't ever had a Meller before,, I had some jacksons when I was younger though. He doesn't seem super bothered by it and he eats perfectly fine and let's me touch his nose and mouth area to look at it. Though I haven't seen him drinking any water ? But he isn't dehydrated so I'm guessing he's just drinking when I'm not around.

Have you checked out the Melleri Discovery Website?? It may answer many of the question you may have about the care and general info on your Meller.

The horn won't bother him much at all. How are you handling his hydration? He should be drinking loads of water. More than likely he is from the March import. That import brought in a ton of sub adult melleri. I am not prying to be bothersome, I just love melleri and always want to make sure that people understand their needs. They are unlike many other species. They can crash in a hurry and show no signs of doing so. I have 12 melleri and have seen the ups and downs of them. So if you ever have any questions at all, just give me a shout.

I am keeping his cage at 70-85% humidity and spraying his cage 4-6 times a day,, I have not seen him drinking which is super worrisome ! However he doesn't have sunken in eyes and he has been gaining weight since I brought him home ! So I am assuming he is drinking water when I am not watching him. I am also planning on getting a water droplet plant to see if he will drink from that ! I am so glad to find other people that own Melleris !! I have been so worried about stuff because I can never find what I am looking for about them online. Thank you !!

Understandable. There isn't a ton of information out there for them. The melleri discovery is a good source.

One thing you want to remember is that they do not like constant humidity like most montanes. They actually like spikes in humidity and then for it to drastically drop. I give my melleri 45 minute drinking sessions in the morning. Then I let them dry out all day until their evening shower. This will be more pertinent as your guy grows. Right now as a sub adult and fresh import, I think it is good to keep his humidity up until he fully rehydrates. His eyes will become much fuller actually.

I am super happy to hear that you are tracking his weight....well done. That is so important and a step that most leave out. So kudos. Once he acclimates in about 3 months, make sure and have a fecal done. Don't treat for any parasites right now, as they are prone to crash with mass die off.

How is his appetite?

Ah okay ! Thats really nice to know ! I was so worried about the humidity because I can get my room to a high humidity really easily but it goes down at some points! I am counting down the 90 days !! Have been since I got him, he seems very calm about his new housing situation which is really good ! So I hope he gets through the 3 months okay !! He is currently eating around 7-12 crickets and 4 meal worms a day, sometimes more ! He seems to like the meal worms more but I want to give him other options with his food ! Thank you for being so helpful with this ! It is really nice to have help with this !!
