Meds question

Meds tend to kill off the good bacteria too! Try NutriBAC df

* The key to a healthy animal is a healthy gut. Proper nutrition is vital to maintain animals in captivity. But if the intestinal tract lacks the ability to properly digest and absorb essential nutrients feeding the proper diet can bring minimal results, thus affecting the health and performance of the animal. A healthy gut with active and viable microorganisms that maintain the proper balanced environment can aid in the absorption of these essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals.

Has anybody had experience of a impacted cham undergoing surgery ? This would be a last resort, but the vet has said we may have to considerate it. My biggest question is whether this would be a good option or just putting her through unneccessary suffering ? If the first op has done the damage what are the odds of another op being successful ? I would be really grateful for some opinions on this just in case we have to consider it. We just want what is best for our little girl.

We did look for Hornworm, but were told it is illegal to import them into England. We did find a butterworm supplier, but again these have had no effect. It is such a shame because the Hornworm does sound like a really good option. I will take a look at the Nutribac now thanks, will this be safe to use alongside the meds ?

The article says that it is safe and you cannot over do it. The cham simply exspells what is not needed. You may want to print the info out and talk to your vet to get their opinion. Personally, I would not do the surgery for impactation unless it is a foriegn object. My adult panther cham went 30 days without pooping and now goes once a week and only when he is outside in the sun. Of course during that 30 day period I limited his food intake.

I will do that, i`m willing to give anything a go that might help. I also feel that way about having the op done as it seems such a big risk although if there is a problem with the gut or bowel it does limit the options.

Thanks Lisa - no sign yet and she has become quite lethargic today, choosing to lay down all day. Her tummy feels quite firm and it is causing her some discomfort i think. She had a hour in the shower and some pureed pear , but still no joy :(

Just a quick update on Gizzy. I noticed yesterday that she is walking with a limp and is relictant to move around her viv. I checked on her again this morning when giving the meds and it has not improved. I called the vet immediately and we will be going in tonight. :( I feel such an idiot because i noticed she was lethargic and put it down to her not going to the toilet still.

I read somewhere about impacted chams sometimes suffering with a pinched nerve - could this be a possibility ?

Sally i am so sorry little Gizzy has to see the vet yet again. I don't have any answers just wanted you to know I am thinking of you and Gizzy.

Thanks so much for the advice and support, it really means alot.

We are setting of to the vets in a few minutes, but things are looking worse still - from 3pm onwards Gizzy has been asleep at the bottom of her viv and she looks huge suddenly. :( I`ll post as soon as we get home.

Well I am now convinced that Gizzy`s illness is more of a crush on the vet !!! lol. We had some x-rays done as she was really swollen and in a lot of pain and we were also concerned about regrowth. She seemed to be going downhill fast. After discussing the options we agreed to up the meds until the 8th of May and then look at operating. The leg problem is a pinched nerve caused by the impaction - thank heavens it was nothing more sinister.

Anyway we duly parted with another wad of cash and toddled off home worried, but hopeful. Just as we pulled into the drive Gizzy decided it would be great to repay me for force feeding her all that medicine by going on my lap  and go she did, hallelujah !!! :D She is now sat at the top of her viv soaking up some warmth and no doubt revelling in her visit to her favourite vet :D

Laurie if only i knew then how true your words were, lol.:D We could not be more pleased and hopefully the leg will settled down now too :D

:D Lol! I bet you've never been so pleased to get that kind of present, lol!:D That made me chuckle! I am so glad she's been at last - must be a great 'relief' for all of you, though perhaps not quite so for your lap! :D Gizzy is such a character and I have everything crossed for her still! It's amazing how much their little bodies can hold, bless!:D

Thanks Tiff :D We are all breathing the biggest sigh of relief ever :D I couldn`t believe the xray and how much there was  Gizzy however seemed thrilled to see Adam and stayed bright green the whole time we were there - the staff all find it hilarious.

We just have to drop a sample in tomorrow so they can do a fecal. We may have to keep her on the Lactulose long term, but that`s a small price to pay if our little princess is happy again :)

So glad to hear that Gizzy seems better. I was so worried after your earlier post. I have read about giving them a belly massage in a bowl of warm water. You might give this a try when it's time for her to go again.

Thanks guys i`m chuffed to bits she`s finally done it. I will definitely be keeping a close eye on her diet and as she loves the pear puree i think i`ll continue to give her that too. I really thought i was coming home without her for a while tonight.

Laurie - Gizzy is certainly one very high maintence girlie, lol ;):p I wouldn`t have her any other way though, she gives us so much back in entertainment value alone :D

I will try the bowl of water and a tummy rub too, i`m sure her ladyship will rather like the pampering. She has toddled off to bed now (in a plant pot ) oblivious to the fuss she`s been causing, bless her. I`m sure we`ll sleep better too :D

Those awful thoughts were running through my mind too when I read your before the vets post. I know just how despairing and helpless you must have felt, having been in the same kind of situation with Lily. I am so pleased you had a happier outcome though! Sending you and Gizzy loads of positive vibes!:D

We have just had the fecal results and it`s good news, there are no parasites or anything untoward :D However Gizzy has begun acting very strange again today and the reason for the repeated impactions is still a complete mystery to us all. The vet thinks it is either a temporary thing following the op or damage to her gut/ intestine :( We will have to keep up the meds and then take her in for a check up in a couple of weeks when she will hopefully have passed the rest.

Tiff - I don`t think we expected to be so torn up if she became ill but it is amazing how such a quirky little creature can become one of the family. I`m begining to realise the anguish you must have gone through when poor little Lily became ill and passed. :( It is great to have others who share such a passion for our little green friends and who can offer invaluable advice and support when you most need it.:)
