Male veiled keeping mouth slightly open sometimes

Hi yall,

9-month-old male Veiled has been opening his mouth slightly throughout the day. I've caught him doing this three or four times now, but he always closes it as soon as I approach, so I had to take this photo from super far away.

He's looking at a hornworm in this photo, but he actually has done this several times lately without any food present. His mouth hangs only slightly ajar.

He's super pissy, so when I reach in to take him out, he hisses and opens his mouth super wide. The inside of his mouth looks healthy and pink when he does this; I don't think this is mouth rot. Is it dehydration?

His enclosure is community-approved; I've made several posts here getting it up to snuff. But on hot days, sometimes the basking temp lingers around 89, which is a bit high, I think. I have taken to intermittently turning off his heat lamp for periods of time to cool it off on these hot days. My house is usually around 76 degrees and we do have AC so it's not sweltering in here.

His stools have gone back and forth lately between too wet and a bit dry, with slightly yellow / orange urates. I give him a hornworm every 3 or 4 days to supplement hydration but he refuses them about half the time because he gets enough vitamin-dusted crickets. He gets misted twice a day, and his enclosure stays in the 60% humidity range at night, and low 40s into the high 30s throughout the day.

Here's another shot:

Temp reads 81F in basking area and 53% humidity. I just misted him a bit ago, so the humidity is a bit higher than usual for daytime. I try to keep it in the high 30s during the day.
He shoots his tongue fully out when he goes for food. He's been pooping a ton, like two good-sized turds each day, but his appetite has waned a bit in recent weeks (he just hit 105 grams in weight) and he's not interested in today's hornworm, which is a little surprising to me.

Most recent vet visit was 5 months ago. Clean bill of health.

When chameleons open their mouths that way that normally means two things, #1 Over Heating and #2 the Beginning of a Respitory Infection. I would keep an eye on your chameleon to decide what is going on and you may want to give your vet a call.

Best Regards

I agree with Jeremy, overheating or RI. If the enclosure is mostly glass make sure you have good air flow throughout. You may already know but uncirculated air can cause RI even if temps and humidity are in check. Just a thought, good luck with him, he’s beautiful!!!

The enclosure has a glass front and back, but the two sides are all mesh. How can I improve circulation? I keep an overhead ceiling fan running most of the time in this room, since I work in here with him!

That sounds fine. As long as the ceiling fan pulls the air up you should have plenty of circulation. I don’t think that would be the issue then.
Lucky! You get to work with your Cham, I’m so jealous. Lol

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I'm also new. But I read that once you can't keep the ambient temperature below 25c/77f that you shouldn't use a heat lamp?

I know when my little one (vailed F/she was 4 months at the time) was gaping like that; I lowered her ambient heat to 20c/68f and she was better and hasn't done it after.
