Indeed! Id love to see an xray of that one to determin if the bone is intact as I suspect, in which case it hasnt really 'fallen off' but the tissues have died and sloughed off leaving the sunken appearance? Very interesting since it seems to establish the 'fleshy part' extends well above the bone itself? or did part of the skull bone die/become brittle and break off?

idk to me it looks pretty clear based on those two pics alone, although the bone may not make up 100% of the support structure of a healthy casque. it appears to clearly make up more than what was lost by the rescue.

IE: it goes further up than half way, and the rescue lost aprox 50%

It's happened to some veileds I had 15 years ago, but not with their casque. I once left a male in the same cage with a female a little too long , which resulted in a horrible fight. The female required her tail removed by a vet and the male was bitten pretty severely in his stomach area, which about 6 months later the scab fell off exposing extremeley soft and scarred skin. The odd thing was, a portion of his ribs fell off with the scab.

They both continued living for years afterwards with no ill effects, though the male looked funny with a big white inkish circle on his underside.

but...with that being said, I am not advocating not taking your animal to the vet. It is the most advisable thing to do right now...

The calyptratus pictured was a rescue I did about 10 years ago now... so unfortunately no current x-rays can be provided as he is long since gone. When I first got him, he did still have his full casque, albeit the tip being grey and severely burned. I probably don't have digital pics of that? After the course of topical and oral antibiotics the casque did fall off leaving what you see in the pics. Of the piece that fell off, I was left with a pyramid shaped piece of bone with no flesh on it. It's hard to see in the pic that jojackson posted, but there is one bone on the front of the casque and two supporting bones going up the back.

Hopefully MikeyLikes reports back soon as I'm interested in what happened to his critter.

Of the piece that fell off, I was left with a pyramid shaped piece of bone with no flesh on it. It's hard to see in the pic that jojackson posted, but there is one bone on the front of the casque and two supporting bones going up the back.

So the casque has seperate bones? its not one big bone (skull) ? Awesome and amazing,
Ill try to dig up some more anatomical orientated pics of the skull that might be clearer.
This makes sense, bone connected by..cartiledge? is displaced by dead sloughing tissues
and the structure fails. The photo makes more sense now.
