Male Nosy Be Throwing Up

hey guys, new to the Chameleon world. I recently bought a (almost 2yr old) male nosy be from a buddy of mine acouple weeks ago. just the other day, i was feeding him crickets and dusting them. later that day, i noticed he threw up all the crickets he ate. i contacted my friend asking what he might think it is. he said i may have been over feeding him. i was giving him about 7 large crickets a day, dusted. so after that, lately ive been giving him about 5 every other day, and tried not dusting them. hes been doin good since i havent dusted them. just yesterday i gave him 7 crickets and dusted them a little, and he threw them back up. other than that... hes been as healthy as can be.

am i over feeding?

can there be a possibility that he doesnt want/like crickets dusted anymore?

any information would be grateful! thanks guys!

I don't think you are over feeding him, but i'm curious on your dusting supplement. What is it actually? Brand name kind of thing? How intense is the dusting?

i use 'repti-calcium' without D3 everyday... with D3 once a month. thats what i was giving him.. and supposedly what my friend was feeding/dusting with. but since, i havent been dusting at all for him and hes been fine. when i was dusting.... it wasnt too heavy, but they were decently dusted.

is it bad that i dont dust for him at all? or is it absolutely essential for him.
(hasnt been throwing up since i havent been dusting. but today when i threw in 7 non-dusted crickets, he ate them all. then threw them up)

does he just eat whatever is in the cage? can he limit himself if hes full, or will he keep eating?

its either over feeding him...... or i shouldnt be dusting them.

THANKS MELBLE!

supplementation is vital for long term health. maybe your supplier of crickets isn't a good one. i think they will eat till they're full. gorging doesn't happen for me. many days there will be a few left overs. can you possibly get feeders from a different shop?

also when are you feeding? to me mid AM is best. late in the afternoon or evening doesn't give them time enough to digest properly before bedding down.

your non D3 vs D3 sounds about right. You should be dusting, and gut loading your feeders. try to possibly limit to a few for a few days and see how he does. if this continues you should try and find a vet that knows herps and possibly chams.

I don't think that the feeders are the problem. I have 3 nosy be's total.. I feed them all the same. I dust and gut load. Like I said, the male is the only one who doesn't get the dusting. I feed all 3 of them first thing at 8am when I get up. I'll feed him just a few tomorrow and lightly dust. We'll see how it goes the rest of the week and next week.

I have two other threads about my female nosys, if you happen to know any information about toe-swelling or lumps behind the front set of legs.

Thanks again!

Hhhmmmm? I'd say keep an eye on him. Keep us posted.

Lumps behind the front legs, and possibly the toe swelling could be gular endema. Here's a cut and paste from a thread I posted on a little while back.

My 9month old Nosy Be Luke started showing a bit of gular edema a couple months ago, so I started ready each and any post I could find on why, how, and what to do. And just like you found out, nobody really knows exactly why. What was reassuring was that everything I read said that they can live with it, and its not to much of a huge deal. One thing I did read was that it was possibly to do w/ the calcium that is being used. Even though some vendor's calcium says 100% calcium only w/ no D3, it may not be 100% calcium only w/ no D3. I read someone changed their "calcium only" to Rep-Cal Calcium 0% D3 from what they were using, and the edema dwindled to a tolerable amount. I used to use Zoo Med Repti Calcium with out D3, and made the switch to Rep-Cal Calcium 0% D3, and Luke's gular edema has subsided to the point where I don't really notice it. I'm happy w/ the results from changing to Rep-Cal Calcium 0% D3 for my every day calcium dusting. I still dust w/ Calcium D3 every other monday (until we move to the outdoor big enclosure), and then the alternating every other monday w/ a multivitamin.

Do a topic search and read up on gular edema here on the forums. You are not the only one who has had this occur. I changed my main calcium to Rep-Cal 0% D3, and I haven't had any problems since.
