Im currently in oahu visiting and will be here for the next week or so im looking for chams but have had no luck if anyone could give me some advice and locations that they might be in that would be helpful thanks!

What are you planning to do if you find some? It may be illegal to export/ship them, depending on local laws, so I would check into that.

I was looking into taking one home to Utah where I live but if local laws prohibit that I'm just interested in holding/ observing them

Yep.
I looked into it bringing one home last time we were there. It seemed to be quite involved. One would think, with them being an invasive species, they would be make it easy for people to take one home with them. I guess if they did, then there would be locals intent on breeding them for that purpose. Who knows.
If you are up for it, and can't find one yourself, they are all over CL (for cheap).

You may have to settle for observing & photographing unless you don't mind being bitten.
Breeding in the wild, I have no idea what diseases/parasites they may pick up or carry.
Could be a great opportunity for some amazing pics, though.
If you're interested in keeping one, there's no shortage of breeders in UT. You'll get a much healthier animal, and as with puppies/kittens, there's some satisfaction in raising one from a young age.
Please do the research, and be prepared for the expense (up to $1000 not including the lizard).
