Likes uvb better than basking?

i dont know but my cham does the same thing he NEVER uses basking light due to my living envirnment here in florida lol guees its hot enough

Probably find the basking light too hot. What temperature is your basking spot?

Also, I've heard they regulate UV/heat separately, something strange like that.

There could be several explanations to this, but chams do need the UV lighting and they know where to get it as the basking light does not produce the beneficial UV rays.

It helps to know what species of chameleon you are referring to. Is this one species or several?

See, thats why i think it could be my temps, because both my brand new panther and my veiled ive had for a while do it. the temp guages on their cages both say 80 so the basking spot is probly too hot?

Mine love their uvb bulbs! They are warm and nice........my male also likes to bask a few hours per day usually, my female will bask less (except right now, after her recent laying, she's really enjoying basking, misting and eating :D)

What is the basking spot temp? Is the 80 degrees the temp in the cage ansd not under the basking spot?

If 80 is the ambient temp then it's too hot.....if that was the basking temp then its too low for an adult male...........

Adult veiled. upper ambient=80
2.5 month ambilobe upper ambient=80
But i just moved the lights up and the baby's basking light is dimmable so i turned it down.

I have my lowest areas at 70F.......basking for my adult(ish) male is at 88, but 85 is enough for a Panther.

i have spent hours worrying about what my chameleon was doing and what he wasn't doing...lol. listen, you will drive yourself nuts. just let the cham do its thing, im sure nothing it wrong. :)

for my male panther, i have about the same temps. my basking temp is a little higher but that's because my vet recommended i bump the basking up to low 90s

my juvenile female surprising like hotter temps but i restrict her from basking in temps higher then 90 because she is young..

my male likes hanging out under the UVB bulb all day and will bask for a little some days... heat from the basking bulb is actually a catalyst which drives the reaction in their skin helping them consume the UV from the UVB bulb as well as help trigger metabolism and other biochemical bodily function.

How you are measuring the temp at the basking spot does matter. If you have an analog or glass type thermometer sitting in the cage somewhere it is measuring the temp of the thermometer bulb casing or the air surrounding it, not necessarily the temp right on the perch the cham would use to bask. The temp you get from the cage generally is probably not the temp the cham would actually be subjected to on that perch. This is why I use a non-contact temp gun instead of the less specific terrarium thermometers. The temp gun will measure the surface temp of anything you aim it at...such as the cham's skin or the basking perch directly under the light. Much more meaningful. Temp guns are not expensive and totally worth it. You can get them at large herp supplies like LLL or ProExotics (tempgun.com).

Then everythings fine, now the baby is crawling on the roof :/
lol

Yeah, it's true.......you might as well worry about why some people are tall and some are short........
Funny little guys, Chameleons........

Its the same with my male veiled he would sit under the baskin light for a couple of hours n bask n then the rest of the day under uvb or randomly walk around his cage.
