Lights

I'm planning to setup a new enclosure for a Male Chameleon, probably a panther, as I'm hearing that Veileds are mean?

I used to have a bearded dragon and I remember having to put my reptison bulb inside the tank below the mesh top because something about the mesh top filtering out the UVB? I am getting a Reptibreeze and so I have to mount it again under the mesh top or what's the easiest way to do that for the UVB and heat lamp?

Also the lowest price I'm seeing on a panther is $300 dollars online, does that sound right?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

I would check out https://www.chameleonforums.com/basic-husbandry-38769/ as it has tons and tons of information pertaining to chameleons.

As for your question, place all lights on top of the cage, never inside as it will burn them. The screen will filter out some UVB but as long as they have a basking spot within 6-8" from the light they will get enough UVB.

Thank you for the info. I will check that site out. Last question about lighting, do I have to have the long tubes in a hood or can I have the bulbs in dual sided dome?

I know I mentioned before but are Panthers and Veileds the same or are Panthers more friendlier?

Thanks again!

You should use the tube style bulb for UVB.

It provides more coverage inside a cage.

Veileds and panthers are the same care, so thats easy enough,

WHen it comes to temperament, its really just based on what animal you get.

some panthers are nice, some are not, and same with veileds.

hand feeding is a great way to work on attitude.

Definitely go with tube lights as they provide much better coverage through out the entire habitat.

If your looking for sweet fixtures and amazing bulbs, check out the site sponsor light your reptiles. Todd only makes and sells top notch stuff. You will not be disappointed. His double and quad fixtures make for some amazing light setups.

I prefer tube UV lighting. Maybe that's what this old-timer is used to, but they work consistently (at least the ReptiSun 5.0s anyway), they light more of the cage, they have no history of causing eye issues or overly intense exposure.

There are mean veileds and there are "nice" ones. There are mean panthers and there are social ones. I doubt even a breeder can guarrantee temperment from bloodlines. Don't worry too much about that. There are ways to work around a cham's personality whatever it ends up being.
