LESSON TO ALL CHAM OWNERS

Hi my name is savanna and this is a story that every chameleon owner should know

So i have a 5 month old veiled chameleon and currently has pneumonia, calcium deficiency and is severely dehydrated and i would like to tell everyone why.

A couple weeks ago he started to shed. He was doing great until then. He was eating fine and drinking well and everything was normal but after he shed, he started to go downhill very fast. *NOTE I ONLY FED HIS CRICKETS CELERY, CARROTS, BROCCOLI AND APPLES NO DUSTING AT ALL* The first sign was that he would eat, NOTHING not even a meal worm. SO i changed his diet and added flightless flies and wax worms to his crickets and mealworm diet. He LOVED the flightless flies but didn't really care for the wax worms, which was fine, every cham is different. But he eventually got bored of the flies and stopped eating again. He would go 2 days with out eating and it was stating to get really bad. All he would do is drink. I would spray a whole 16 ounce water bottle and he would still be asking for more water. He got super skinny and you could see all his bones. The second sign i saw was that he had a hard time breathing. I would notice that he would take a big breath of air, not breath for like 20 seconds then go back to normal. The third sign i saw that he wouldn't move around a lot. I would go into my room and he would be sitting on this branch, i would came back in 2 hours later he would be in the same spot. And the last sign is that all he would do is sleep. Sleep sleep sleep all day with the sun shining sleeping. After that i called the vet so i could make an appointment for him because he was getting so bad. I had went to long not having him get checked up. So this morning i had been in the vet for 4 hours. I was crying and crying because he was so weak and tired he couldn't even keep his head up. We rushed him to the hospital and they took him right away. The first thing they did was weigh him. he was 14.3 ounces *not how much he should be* Then they checked his mouth. On the inside it was a little bit blue instead of pink. Then they checked his breathing. they said is so raspy and bad that they needed and x ray. So we got one done and there was barley any oxygen because his lungs were so clogged up. Also with the x ray they were able to tell that his bones were so weak and could barely see them. So they diagnosed him pneumonia and calcium deficiency and because of the low intake of calcium, he was super dehydrated. So now everyday i have to give him 2 shots a day for calcium in the legs and one shot of medicine in his mouth for pneumonia for 3 weeks. He has a chance of surviving but if i stop his medicine he will most likely die. His life depends in my hands

LIFE LESSON TO EVERYONE!!! IF YOU SEE THE SLIGHTEST CHANGE OF BEHAVIOR IN YOUR CHAM PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEE GET HELP RIGHT AWAY.

So sorry to hear about your Cham. Definitely the dramatic weight loss and sleeping during the day are major red flags. Hope your guy pulls through!

I'm so sorry about your chameleon. I think the most important lesson to be learned, is to do your research before you bring home your chameleon. That way you know the proper way to gutload your insects, that you need a UVB light and the proper supplements to be used. If the pet stores that sell these animals would give the PROPER information or a good informative care sheet, a lot of problems could be easily avoided. I hope your guy recovers, and I'm so sorry that this is happening to you and your pet.

I would agree the main lesson to be learned here is to always properly research the animal, and have your enclosure up and running properly before you purchase. I hope your little guy pulls through and sorry to see you going through this. Please familiarize yourself with the caresheets on this forum and apply the supplement schedule shown there. Good luck and I hope it helps.
