Le Coitus: Verrucosus ?

KarmaChams

Hey Everyone,

I acquired a male and female Verru early this year, when they arrived the female laid 23 eggs as I took her out of her box. However none were fertile. After starting to simulate a dry season, I entered the reptile room this morning to see them entwined. I immediately left, hopefully i did not interrupt! (ha)

Should they be separated, or might they try again? This is my first attempt at breeding any chams, any advice on this species would be great! I have another 2 females and a male arriving Tuesday.

You could leave them together until the female shows signs of not tolerating the male. You need to very careful to not let the male cause her stress. I would give mine a half hour after the first time I see coupling, and separate them. But I am always cautious.

If you are getting more verucosus you must have found the chameleons that are right for you.:)

Okay, that sounds like a pretty good idea. They currently live together in a large enclosure with seperate basking areas. I will move him to a seperate enclosure so she can enjoy her space.

And I certainly have! I have been tong feeding these guys for the most part and have gotten a little feel for their personalities, spending so much time with them. Posts with this species often have "underrated" included in the text - I can't agree more!

Thanks, LPR! Actually, I used your notes to get them to breed in the first place! After about 3 weeks of the slightly dryer season, they mated on their own. I only observed them mating once, in the early morning after their lights were on and they had been misted.
For a few days prior to this, the male would bob his head at me occasionally when I came close. He has not done that before or since, and he is normally very "chill." He does not gape or flare up when I approach, maybe because I tong-feed them? But in any case, he definitely was acting strangely, and she was extremely light tan for those days as well.

Thanks again for the info, it is a great help!
