Layla is gravid, but no desire to dig

We took Layla to the vet yesterday because she kept closing her eyes during the day. The vet noticed her mouth was green, fearing a liver disease, but after taking an xray he says the liver seemed to be fine, no impaction, but she is gravid! (We also have meds for her too) We have had a laying bin in her cage for about a week now and she has never shown signs of being interested in it, but we figured with her age, she should have one.

Now that we know she is gravid, we really want her to dig so she doesn't become egg bound (that's what it's called, right? When they don't lay?). Is there anything any of you do in order to promote digging? I dug a test hole and left it there hoping maybe she'd be interested in that, but nothing yet. We've even placed her onto the sand and she just climbs right off.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Is she still eating? Is she roaming around allot? Is she really fat? It just might not be time for her to lay yet. Did the vet see eggs in the X-ray?

She is still eating normal and roaming normal for the most part. She isn't fat still a small girl (only 26 grams) she's slightly bigger in the belly but not fat by any means. The vet did see the eggs in the x-rays.

It always amazes me when a vet thinks that a chameleon has liver disease because of the inside of its mouth when so many chameleons have yellow or other colors on the inside of their mouths naturally.

In another post you said you showed her to your male...that could have started her to cycle...has there been a place for her to dig in her cage (soil in the pot of a live plant, etc.) or just what you added recently??

What are the meds for that you mentioned?

She's been closing her eyes for quite a while now, hasn't she?? Was that issue ever solved? Did the vet test to see how her vitamin A levels are?

Has she been sitting low in the cage? Did she ever roam the cage recently? Has she been drinking more than usual? Eating habits changed?

Did the "eggs" in the x-ray look round or oval?

Well He didn't say it was def. liver problems. he said Seeing how her gums were bright lime green not the usual yellowish color, that it was a sign of liver malfunction hence the x-ray to check the size of the liver. There is a big plant in the cage but unlikely that she would dig in that cause of river rocks we put on top. So we added the laying bin. She's been closing her eyes for about a week and a half now. Not all day but a few times during the day. it could also be possible that this being her first clutch that she putting excessive energy into the eggs. He didn't take any blood from her because she is a little to small and feisty and and it could very possibly do more harm then good. Not to mention our bill at that point was already $300. All together (eyes being closed aside) shes acting normal.

When the vets look at the color in the mouth they are looking for jaundice (an indication of liver issues) and some vets see the (un-pink) color inside the chameleon's mouth and think that's what they have.

Has she been sitting low in her cage? Drinking more than usual? Eating less?
A couple of weeks ago, was she roaming the cage?

Did the "eggs" in the x-ray look round or oval?

What are/were the meds for??

Its possible your chameleon is eggbound....but I can't be sure.

Her mouth is NOT normal in color by any way, shape or form. When we say lime green we literally mean LIME green, as in really bright green, basically neon green, not normal, not "yellowish".. LIME NEON green. The vet we brought her to is very knowledgeable and was extremely excited to work with a panther chameleon. In fact he was really happy we brought her in and even said it's always awesome to see people owning animals like this actually take care of them. Any good vet, or even a human's doctor, will look at a symptom, think about what it may be, and hopefully be able to rule something out. He never said "Layla definitely has liver disease" he said the coloring was a symptom and he wanted to take an x-ray to help him figure out what is wrong with her. Like we said before, she is too small to take blood samples, even in her tail, so that option is out of our control.

The meds are Metronidazole, which she gets 0.01 mL once every other day, the other is Calorad Supplement, in which she gets 0.02 mL every day once a day. One was to help prevent liver disease and the other I cannot remember what it was for to be honest. Our appointment was at 10 am and we didn't leave the vet till 1 pm.. we were exhausted and just wanted to get out of there. And after dropping $300 on a vet visit my mind was not exactly clear.

As for the x-rays we didn't get a chance to see them. He had mentioned before the x-ray he would show us so we could see the eggs and I completely forgot at the end of the day, due to what I just said in the previous paragraph. The vet was an extremely smart and enthusiastic exotic pet vet here in NJ and was recommended by our other vet (our dog's vet). I do not think he is just "assuming" anything in regard to the eggs or possible liver disease. In my opinion he was being a very good vet who was trying to help us get to the bottom of some things. We have a follow up appointment in 2 weeks after her meds are done.

I have only seen her at the bottom of the plant once since we have had her but she was really just walking around on her vines. She does not seem to be eating or drinking any differently. She has always been an active chameleon and walks all over the place all day. She's moving around a lot right now, as I type this, but towards the top of the cage. We asked if he could see in the x-ray how many eggs were in her and he said that he really couldn't tell because it just looked like a little sack filled with tiny grapes.

We don't think she is egg bound, to be honest. I think Jannb is right... she must not be ready to lay yet. She really honestly doesn't even look gravid to us. You can't see any eggs or "marble" looking bumps around her tummy, or even feel them as of yet, so they really must've just formed recently.

Thanks, we are thinking she will definitely be OK. She seems to be acting 100% normal to be honest. She only closed her eyes once during the day today, which is a vast improvement, and she was all over the place today.

Jannb - how long does it usually take for females to want to lay the eggs?
