Lay bin soil

Hey everyone, my baby girl has her big girl colors. She got them last week and I have. A little lay bin in her enclosure to see when she starts digging so I can transfer her into her bigger one. What's the best type of substrate to use? I heard play sand but I feel like it might cave in on her if it's not wet enough. Coconut fiber substrate? What have yall done? Thank you ❤

Play sand is commonly used. You can mix play sand and coconut fiber but long time keepers use mostly sand I believe

Play sand is fine and won’t collapse as long as the moisture level is good. I’d avoid coco coir as it’s too airy to hold a tunnel. You could add a bit of organic soil if you wanted. The whole key is making sure it’s kept moist enough.

I’ve used straight sand before. But depending on the species, I’ve mixed in soil as well to help keep it moist enough for them to dig. Sometimes the sand dries too quickly before they’ve finally dug enough test holes
