As a general rule, lights are on 12 hours and off 12 hours. If your heat source is one of those red lamps it should go off as well. Chams can tolerate temps as low as 50F at night. If you are concerned about them having heat at night then you can use a ceramic heat emitter. It will give off heat but no light.

If you've been doing this for ONE WHOLE YEAR!? Well I know it's the thought that counts so cheerio mate on the good look in' out. But your little niiga most likely has learned to adapt. Or,more that likely , since it takes about 3 years to actually kill a chameleons, due to the fact that they are complete ninja,shape-shifting,God-creatures, you just haven't had time to kill your chameleon YET! Like all things time will insure more will be revealed. Just sit and wait and you will see.

It can take a lot less than 3 years to kill a cham. To answer the OP, yes, chams have full color vision so he was probably disturbed by the night lights, but maybe he found a place where he could hide enough to get some rest during all that time. He is most likely stressed (or very tired) as a result and will be much better off with "real" darkness at night.

I find this disturbing. Just common sense would have you to believe a chameleon lives on our earth, with a day and night ligtht cycle. If someone told you to keep constant light on you chameleon they were dead wrong. Please, please read proper care of chameleons offered on this very helpful website. There are many aspects of care that go into successful chameleon husbandry. Here is a start:

I think part of the problem was trying to maintain some sort of regular temperature and the visible light was a byproduct. Someone should know better, but I suspect they just weren't thinking about the light itself. We all know how often people get all bent out of shape when we tell them to let the cham cool down at night.
