He's very scared. I keep looking in on him and he was out once and saw me and flew back into his shell :( Poor lil guys so scared.

Anyone have any name suggestions?

Hermit crabs rule! They are awesome little pets. Chock full of personality. They love climbing too, so add some wood or sticks or plastic mesh to the tank. Of course, make sure you've got a tight fitting lid or your cats will end up with a tasty lunch.

I'd name him Lance.

Have fun!

you could name him APOCALYPSE in all capital letters as to be yelling his name, and everytime you say his name you have to yell it. well thats what i would do atleast

Right now I'm trying to leave him alone. He's come out and is walking around but when he sees movement he's back in for like 5 minutes :)

we were picking him out and my BF was all "Those things are gross" Maybe I can change his look on the lil guys

Thanks for the same suggestions!

Oh my-you just made me feel really OLD. I had hermit crabs-many of them--about 28 years ago! :(

They are totally cute-but wait until you watch one change shells-there is nothing cute about the part inside the shell! Give them lots of shells so they can pick the size and shape they want. It is funny to watch them "try on" the different shells!

I used to have 2 of them, named them Dory and Al (don't ask me why:)). Also put in a moist sponge, they can get hydrated from it. And don't use sand, gravel is better, at least that's my opinion:)

He was a spur buy. I've been reading on them for when we get the BIG lot in the summer. But I wanted one bad so we went and picked one up. His tanks not ready for him yet :( Its a 55 Gallon (I know HUGE for a single Crab)

Right now he's in a 16Qt bucket with sand, plants, water dish and food dish. We have something in the dish of water so that he can drink! and we've given him a fresh salad!

I prefer the sand because its easier for them to burry in if they have too.

I used to own two of them. One of them changed shells on me, but he didn't like the shells we had and he stayed out of a shell for 3 days before going back to his old one and later died :( Theres so much to do to care for them right. I never knew before a week ago :|

I used to keep my two in a tank, with water and would feed them pellets. I never knew they needed salt water and calcium as well :|

I put mine with gravel and they buried just fine in my opinion, but you can do what you want:) The only reason I like gravel more is that the sand would stick to them and it would become kind of a mess.

Yeah sand does get stuck to them and into their water, so you have to clean it more often. But I think that helps me remember that they do need new water and food.

I snapped off a few more pictures of him. The first one he was semi out of his shell and the second one is of his temp. home. His tank is in the middle of being ready for him, seems the tank has a lot to be cleaned. (Pictures were taken last night, we've been to the store since and bought him a sponge for the water)

He's doing okay, he's pigging out in his salad right now.

Oh yeah.. the BF LIKES the Crab. :)

he doesnt have a choice does he? hahaha jm. Cool hermit crab. I'd put some wood and some of those small half logs in there.

Oh yeah.. the BF LIKES the Crab

OUTSTANDING!

Because the only thing that is better than one hermit crab; are TWO (or more) hermit crabs! They are actually quite social and do best in groups. If you think one is interesting, wait 'til you see two (or more) of them interact.

I'm not enabling you at all

What cuties! We get paid on Thursday so we are making another trip to get him a friend :) This summer we have an order of 10 crabs coming in, makes the 55 gallon tank seem less empty. :)

We've been looking for some things for him to climb on, we have some sticks but when we put them in the bucket, he could get out if he wanted too. His tanks almost ready for him so when thats up we'll be adding a lot more things for him to climb on.

Thanks. We ended up naming him Hermmy. Weird name huh? When we didn't have a name for him I asked my BF to hand me the Hermmy and the name stuck. Right now the lil guy is sleeping under his fake plant hide-out :)

We picked up two TINY guys. (Mines a girl .. Don't really know for sure but she's cute!)

I'll try and get some pics ASAP. I've never had them this TINY before :) Will be interesting to see them grow!

Right on!

You can sex hermit crabs by the presence of gonophores (females genital openings) on the first segment of the third leg. Sadly they have to be out of their shells to see them and well good luck with that! Since they don't breed in captivity, this point is moot.

I wanna see pics of the new dudes.

Cheers!

Pictures!

Sorry if the pictures are a bit blurry :) Hard to get a close up on these guys and have it clear as day with the camera I have.

First is of Sophia: Name just came to me and I can't get it out of my head, so its her name.

Here is a picture of what their current cage looks like:

And their 55 Gallon tank. See the water stains? We are trying to remove those before we put the Hermits in it, to make it look better. Should be done by the end of the week end with any luck.
