Just bought a cham to save his life....need help.

its only 3 pages for me, you can change how many posts per page you get, but anyways i too am curious as to how the animal is.

Ok...I just got back from the vet!.Good and bad news.Vet said he had a very bad parasite problem possibly from what they where feeding him before i bought him, and was suffering from severe dehydration from the previous owner. He gave lucky a vaccine two help him get rid of the parasite problem, told me to keep lucky well hydrated and leave him alone and give him some privacy to recover.Vet said he had a good chance of recovering, but also still had a chance of not making it because he had been having the parasite problem for too long..I guess its a 50/50.

HOPE HE MAKES IT..

I am curious
What vet did you go to?

So he didn't even address the problem of the swollen foot or the tail?? Did the vet even notice the foot? Sorry...but the foot is infected and if its not looked after, eventually the infection will spread and the chameleon will die.

If its condition hasnt deteriorated too much and you can rehydrate it as quickly as possible (wet feeders) it will have a better chance of recovery. Let us know how it goes.

The vet said the foot would get better, he said nothing about the tail????.

Id be treating the tail with neosporin, or betadine etc, try to prevent infection.
The foot looked pretty well healed over to me *shrugs*
Good luck. :)

you probably have it in your medicine cabinet. It is a common skin treatment cream. Any grocery store would have it also.

Great Job at getting him to a Vet! You are on the right track my friend... You are going to feel so good when this guy turns around for you into a beautiful healthy Montium. And if he doesn't make it... then you did do everything you could... and he passed in a better way then he would have...

Big Kudos for stepping up there.

Yep, shouldnt be hard to get.

I'm sorry...but the right front foot is swollen and its not going to get better on its own IMHO. Even if the chameleon is on antibiotics IMHO its not going to get better unless its debrided and flushed out....might even take several treatments to get rid of it. The chameleon may wall it off for a while, but eventually it will spread.

Right front foot swollen? Angles in photos can be deceiving...I thought you were referring to the left front toes.

Why arnt you a vet Kinyonga? :) Better pics of the front feet might shed some light?

Too old and I would be "afraid" to do any major surgery even if I could. I can de-scab and clean out wounds so they will heal from the inside out, I can give injections, watch the surgeries (very interesting to do this), and a number of other things....but I just couldn't cut into an animal and feel "safe" in doing it.

(BTW...if I was a vet, I would also debride and clean out the other front foot too. Even though its not very swollen, it still bothers me.)

Maybe you could train as a vet nurse? sounds like plenty of relative experience. :)

No such thing as 'too old' , think young! :)

The brain still works but the body won't comply!

I do want to start some university courses that will help me understand some things better (I hope) than I do now. (Always avoided biology when I was in school in favor of physics and chemistry.)

Too many critters still around here taking up my time still. I cut down in the last 6 years from 120 to 40 (and that never counted babies)! The 40 includes 1.3 leos that have been here since 1993 and although they finally stopped reproducing two years ago...they aren't looking old yet. I have two cone heads (laemanctus longipes) that have been here over 9 years...and most of the other "non-chameleons" have been here for that long too.

I've been keeping reptiles for over 25 years now and I played with frogs, snakes, toads, bugs, etc. before that!
