Just bought a cham to save his life....need help.

Correction to my last post.

I'm sorry. I just looked at the photos again and the lips do look a little curled inward. This should disappear with proper hydration.

Really, The cham does not have to die... But with the attitude you are showing..."If it dies it dies..." Just shows that you are really not interested in helping the animal, but rather you are just interested in having a cool pet until it expires due to the lack of attention you refused to get him.

So, Where is your heart at? It can't seek medical attention itself... and when it is needed, It relies on you to provide that for him. You took on that responsibility when you bought him. It is one of the responsibilities that comes with wanting to own any Live animal. You can go to jail or get slapped with a huge fine for keeping cats, dogs, and other pets in need of medical care that is not being provided, it should be no different with reptiles in my opinion. Now you have been told that your cham needs medical care... Your telling me your choice of action is to ignore it and hope it doesn't die!?!?!

Joe,
I'm not sure how it works in the USA but I do know in Canada, this can & does happen. It requires a little more work on our part here, but our SPCA will get involved, remove animals, lay charges & fines and/or jail time.
This should happen more often where required and will if those responsible care givers out there make the reports.

To the OP, you wished to save a cham and if you were prepared to meet every aspect of the chams needs/requirements - whether costly to yourself or not - then you would have been doing the cham a tremendous favor, otherwise the poor cham is no better off in current situation then was with the 'sellers'. :(
If you are not prepared to get the medical attention required then atleast of the respect for your cham to contact the rescue that is available to you.

EDIT: Your recent post was not showing?? Please update us after your vet visit.

i see everyone's side of the story... ha.. that's great that you picked up lucky and your doing him a favor by trying to rescue him, and that's awesome you took him to the vet! I'm curious to hear what's going on, hopefully we hear soon so we can all try to help you rescue him!

P.S. .... let's try to remember this post is about the chameleon.. let's forget about pointing fingers at people saying where that chameleon would be better off here or there, he is now in his arms, and now he is taking care of him! he took him to the vet which is a great step to bring life back to our little fellow! ... this post got off topic and it sounded like REAL WORLD for second ha! lets just try to help, we all want to see Lucky make it! but im neutral with the whole pointing fingers, I just want everyone to be happy and happy for this chameleon making it to the vet

let's try to remember this post is about the chameleon

This is about the responsibilities that fall on anyone who decides to keep live animals captive in their home. The proper care of animals is no joke, and while some may take suffering lightly... most here won't.

let's forget about pointing fingers at people saying where that chameleon would be better off here or there, he is now in his arms, and now he is taking care of him! he took him to the vet which is a great step to bring life back to our little fellow!

He said he has now decided to take him to the Vet... and I hope he does...
I think you may want to re read the thread... This whole thing started casue he said he couldn't provide medical care, and wouldn't give it up to someone that could.

Didn't you say...
lets just try to help, we all want to see Lucky make it!

That is all we are trying to do... It is not about offending someone, or "pointing fingers", or creating stupid drama... I just think that the animal deserves to be cared for properly.

This is not some stupid Reality show... This is Real Reality (I can't believe I have to even use the term "Real Reality" what has the world come to:rolleyes:)... Even though you and I are sitting here viewing it on a computer screen... That is an actual living breathing animal suffering in it's own reality, that needs help.

I will be happy when Ocelot gives us an update on what his Vet says.

By the way... Veileds were on the Yemen season, not Madagascar.

This doesn't seems to be very reliable...it kills anything, promise wonders and is 100 % organic...hahaha

Hey Benny,

although I cannot say it does everything it says. I have used it and have seen it have great results with my mellers and some Jacksons I aws having problems with. At the very least I can say it worked well with perking up a few Wild caughts I have used it on.

Other forum members have used it with good results with treating some types of parasites and even URI.

It may not be a miracle worker but I truely beleive it works in some cases. I am speaking from personal experiance and the experiance of others I know of who use it. It may be worth a try you may be surprised by the results. .

Thanks for the confirmation ryan!.....I bought it next day air.I cant wait to receive it.

Not to be a jerk back, but your wrong pal.The little guy is better off with me even though he is dying. He was worst off with the seller at the swapmeet....no basking light, no uvb and in the same cage with other chams.I definitely did a favor for this little guy.Im pretty sure he would rather die with me than with them.

i agree, he was better off. i dont think anyone can logical support the contrary.

Two years ago i took in 3 rescues with not money for vets, did what i could, " stopped the bleeding " if you will, and adopted them out individually to keepers that had more funds available for follow

they were most certainly better off in my care in that case, and in most cases like that.

if he didnt end up taking the animal to the vet it may have died, but in his care the animals suffering would be less, if not MUCH less. That FACT alone makes what he did positive.

he still would have paid for a sick animal with his own money and spent more on feeding and supplies.

This forum is soo much drama now, keepers are letting their emotions govern their comments. None of you can really believe the cham was just as bad off with this new keeper.

I think you did the honorable thing sir, and you KNOW you did the honorable thing i hope that counts for something.

I have, and would have done the same thing

Did you actually read the whole thread?

I can't believe you would say this having read the whole thing!

edit: to the OP, I'm glad you decided to take it to the vet and to get it some reptaid. I've used it and like Ryan had good results from it on my Melleri. Well on one the other I believe is going into liver failure. Not much you can do about that. A vet visit this week will give me a better understanding. My point is that reptaid is a good general medication but is not a substitute for the vet. At the very least you need to take this animal to have a fecal done before and after treatment to ensure you got them all.

Edit: The bulk of what I said was stated repeatedly so I felt there was no need to add additional emphasis on thoughts already posted. Ocelot your doing a good thing here and I commend you for taking on such a huge responsibility. I think the bulk of the "drama" was simply due to your previous statement. It started an uproar which is very understandable considering we all love chameleons and well that comment was IMHO a very poor choice of words that was bound to start something. Just trudge on and keep trying I think you understand what you've gotta do for this little guy and where to go when you don't.;) Best of luck to you and lucky:)

Thanks for the confirmation!.....I bought it next day air.I cant wait to receive it.

Please consult with your vet first before you take someone's advice here on which product to use. You are looking for a miracle and I'm sorry but there is no miracle.

The money on this product plus the "next day air" could have paid an exotic vet fee. When is your appointment?

I love you choose to quote where my name is mentioned. I only provided my feedback on my experience with reptaid. I get you are pointing out the cost could have been used for a vet but it does look like you are saying my advise should not be taken.

I actually have not advised anyone in this thread. Only provided some feed back.

Thanks
