Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?

Male veiled, 6 months old. I've had him for about 6 weeks.

Handling - Every day, up to 15 minutes.

Feeding - Large crickets, this week gutloaded with orange, apple, carrots, and dinofuel. Next week the plan is to add some mustard greens, arugula, and maybe some grape leaf if my friend brings some over. I'm getting some superworms on Sunday too.

Supplements - Calcium w/o D3 daily, with D3 twice a month, multivitamin twice a month

Watering - I have a hand-mister. I mist for sessions of a liter at a time, 2-3 times daily. I am aware this is not enough, especially on those days he only gets 2 mistings. He also has a dripper. I do see him drink! Both when I mist and from the dripper.

Fecal Description - Good dark brown, last urate was lightly yellow. Previously it was white.

History - None. He was from chameleons northwest, I am very happy with them.

Cage Info:
Cage Type
- Screen cage 18x18x36

Lighting - Reptisun 5.0 for uvb, 75watt housebulb for heat. 9:30am - 9:30 pm.

Temperature - 90 basking spot, 70 bottom of cage. Lowest nighttime temp is 70.

Humidity - 40%-80% just after misting. Never goes below 40%. I have 3 live plants in the cage, and also I live in the Pacific Northwest.

Plants - Pothos, Ficus ben., Jasmine

Placement - In my room, I'm the only one that goes in here, no fans or vents. Top of cage is 5 ft up.

Location - Pacific northwest

Current Problem - I caught him with his eyes closed at 7pm when I got home today. Because of his urate, I know he is slightly dehydrated. As soon as I got home, he started being active around his cage, I misted him, and refilled his dripper. Because I was concerned, I also tried to give him a shower. I didnt' see him drink in the shower, though, I think I just stressed him out. I'm also concerned about me handling him maybe too much now. He doesn't come out voluntarily, so I just slide my fingers under his feet so he grabs onto my hand. Once he's out, he acts normal, and I allow him to climb on my desk and window plants. This morning, when I misted, he bulged out one eye. I panicked but he put it back less than a minute later, and I read this is to clean his eye.

Anyway, I am a paranoid chameleon mom, and I guess I just need some reassurance that I'm doing the right thing. He's being really active now and exploring his cage. I am attaching two pics; first is him being an acrobat in the shower, and second is to show you his head and body a little better. His eye was closed from getting the shower droplets. Thanks so much guys.

Just looked it up, sunset is 8:35 here right now. In the past he has liked to settle down to sleep an hour before lights off, so maybe this is the case. I hadn't thought of that.

Yeah...it could easily be that. However, it might not be, so make a note somewhere (oh, wait, you made one here!) and keep a little journal of when you catch him with eyes closed. If it's always an hour or so before sunset, then it's not really an issue...but if sometimes it's 2 hours, sometimes it's 3.....it's an issue.

Thanks, I'll do just that. I have a little planner anyway to remind me when to give him his D3 and vitamin. Thanks for being so patient and helpful with me, it helps to have this board to turn to when I'm being a little overprotective.

Oh, gosh, you didn't require any patience whatsoever! This board is a fabulous resource, I'm so glad we both managed to find it.

Well, the reason I said that is because I feel like I post for the littlest things, because I'm a new cham owner (new reptile owner, for that matter!) and I really don't want anything to happen to him.

If Jean-Luc is dehydrated, try a cup of earl grey, hot.

Works everytime...

It sure does ;)

Just to follow up, I think we are on to something with him thinking it's bedtime an hour before sundown. It's currently 7:24 here, and he is now in his favorite sleeping spot, awake, but in a sleeping position. I got home earlier today and he was totally normal and alert.

Thats good to hear.

Mine usually head to the bed-area early, and since Eliza had already mentioned that, I couldnt resist the joke. ;)

Just continue to watch him closely.

I've moved mine outside because I'm pretty sure I have a mold problem in their room, and I find that temperature, more than light, dictates when they hunker down. I live in the East County and it can sort of "snap to cold" here because the marine layer doesn't usually reach this far. Once it gets cool, mine go to their sleepy spot...it doesn't matter if there's another hour or two of light left.

There is an awesome herp vet in north Seattle on Aurora. They are treating our 4 month old cham right now. If it gives you peace of mind, for about $45 they'll give you a fecal sample container. Just follow their instructions and bring them a fresh one so they can test it. They told us that it's not uncommon for chams to come down with parasites regardless of whether they're wild or captive bread. It's just a thought. Easy way to rule something out.
