I'm new to this forum so sorry if its in the wrong section.
I got my veiled chameleon 12-04-09 and I love it. He is young and eats alot. (has spurs on back feet)

I have a few questions.
1) When I mist, should I spray him aswell? hot, warm, or cold water?
2) Are fake ficus trees good enough when they are adults? if not, how big do real ones get?

I can't seem to remember anymore questions but if I do I will post them.
Oh!
3) How can I post pictures so you can see my veiled chameleon and tell me the age?
4) Is there a way to tell the age?

Thanks for helping

Hello and welcome! A good way to make sure you are doing eveything right is to fill out this form and post pictures!

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

You can download pictures by uploading them to something like Photobucket and then copying and pasting the IMG line.

To answer your first questions: If you get a fine mist our of your sprayer-you can fill it up with hot water and you will get a warm mist. If your mister sprays bigger drops-you don't want to soak you cham with super-hot water. I spray most of my chams directly, very lightly. Sone do not like to be sprayed though-so spray around them! Live plants are better than fake. Some people here use fake Ficus for free-ranging-but I find that the fake stuff often has staples and sharp edges. If you post a pic-we can guess age.

Age is hard to guess as lizards grow according to how much they are fed. My 3.75 month old has colors that many his age don't display. But there are also chameleons that are his age that display even more vibrant and spectacular than his. We can guess, but you'll never know for sure.

Also tell us how long he is from nose to butt (snout to vent)

Welcome to the forum! Its a good place to learn about chameleons!

You said..."When I mist, should I spray him as well? hot, warm, or cold water?" warm to hot water...you can gently mist him...but be careful that you don't spray it directly into the mouth so that it gets into the lungs.

You said..."Are fake ficus trees good enough when they are adults? if not, how big do real ones get?"...I don't like using artificial plants after they are about 3 months of age because veileds will eat foliage and may try to eat the fake leaves.

Julirs, here is all the questions you asked.

1) Veiled chameleon, male, and today would be 4 days in my care. dont know age(click link to see him).... http://www.flickr.com/photos/44910169@N07/4170526240/in/photostream/
2) Since I got it, I have handled it 3 times. Not much since I was told not to all the time.
3) He gets about 10-11 crickets a day and eats potho plant. I feed the crickets..mustard greens (also hang some in cham cage) potatos, apples, and Fluker's *high calcium* cricket diet gut-loading food. (it's vitamin & mineral concentrate)
4) I haven't bought any dusting supplement yet but I will
5) I place ice cube on screen top and i use about 3-4 ice cubes a day.(they drip onto leaves and into the live plant) No I have not seen him drink yet.
6) droppings are blackish yellow?? idk
7) He eats every bit of his crickets and eats some of the real potho plant. He has only been in a pet store before me.

8) its a full screen cage.(description in photo tells the height and things)(I know I need bigger but now this is what I made and will work till it grows..) click link to see..... http://www.flickr.com/photos/44910169@N07/4170495704/
9) Lighting-- 26w uvb repti glo bulb(5.0 compact) and a 75w infrared heat glo. (suggested by pet store) I turn the uvb on in the morning before school then off at night and the heat stays on 24/7 (BOTH by Exo terra)
10) idk what you mean by ranging temp but it stays above 65 all times
11) I don't measure humidity b/c I do not know how but I give it a warm heavy mist in the morning and thats it.
12) one live plant for now and its a potho. (will try to buy more)
13) The cage is in my bedroom on top of my dresser. Low traffic because hardly anyone goes in my room. No vents, fans, or drafts.
14) I am located in the U.S.....Indiana

Pssh, I have not measured him but you could probably guess by the picture. (link above)

Thanks all who has answered and I hope this info helps.

:D

fix this

temps. need to be around 80-85
gotta check on the humidtiy and spray 4-5 times a day....not once.
also get a dripper system setup.

A linear tube reptiglow 5.0 or a linear tube reptisun 5.0 is better as some compacts can cause burns and blindness. You need to buy a digital thermometer and a digital hydrometer to measure temps and humidity. You could be cooking him and not even know it. You need a calcium w/o d3 to use almost very feeding, a calcium w/ d3 to use twice a month, and a multivitamin to use once or twice a month. Dust these lightly on the crickets. Handling should be no more than once a week unless he voluntarily climbs onto you by himself.

He needs to be misted with warm water at least twice a day for at least a minute each time. The yellow (urate) in his poop should be a white color. Yellow and orange indicate dehydration. His highest basking branch should be above your head.

And lastly, you need a picture of him on a ruler for us to give a more acurate guess o his age. Include several pictures of when he is not angry from the side view. I cannot guess his age from that picture but I can tell you he looks young. Probably younger than 4 months, but again, I need better pictures with a ruler in it.

This morning I was watching him because I had time. He snapped his tongue at the dropping water and got some. That would be the first I have seen.
Droppings brownish black and white.. um
Pssh,I will work on buying a thermometer and a hydrometer. Also the dusting of the crickets...I need 3 different kinds? And I will try the picture with a ruler but that will be a bit. ALSO when I mist do I also mist him even if he doesn't like it?
Thanks

is a dripper really manditory? I don't have chams yet, but was thinking the misting would suffice?

You need a calcium with and without D3, and a vitamen supplement
i have these, and they're really cheap online!
without d3
reptivite
d3

I believe it depends on where you're located. My manager's cham is almost 4 years old and he's had him since he was a baby, and he's never had a dripper, just mist mist mist!
I had one for my veiled, but it flooded the bottom of the cage, and he would just drink off of the leaves anyway. But some people prefer to have one, it's easier to see if they're drinkin' and it's more!

L30girl, yes I would say so. Misting will dry when your away and not spraying. Place ice cubes on screen top for a cheap dripping system. I'd say this is a must.
