It's normal, at least to my 6months experience of owning one. Mine changes colors when I bring him outside of his enclosure. He turns brighter. Someone else with more experience can chime in on it.

Those black splotchy colors are stress colors. He's out in the open and feeling very very vulnerable to being eaten by a predator. You are still included in that group of creatures that are just waiting to pounce on him and eat him. They do not like to be out in the open like that.
