Is This Natural For A Carpet Cham?

the temp under the bulb is probably like 85 degrees i would say.. the area that the digital temp is reading is away from the bulb and in the corner and it's reading 76 degrees? how hot should it really be? maybe that's why he's black and dark brown all the time? i've only had him for this is the 4th day.. if you've been following my threads on him.. its only a 40W bulb in there..

When you say "probably 85 degrees", there's uncertainty. You need to find out the actual basking temp. Take your temp probe and place it exactly where he basks. Let is sit there for a few minutes with the enclosure door closed until you get a steady reading. I would recommend a basking temp of 85-87 degrees. An ambient enclosure temp. of 76 degrees should be okay. I saw that you keep your humidity @70%. Try backing down a little to 60% but make sure he gets enough water to drink.

He doesn't look like he's trying to get away from the heat though, sometimes they do that upright gape if they have a respiratory infection, they are trying to dry out their sinuses. Have you noticed any crackling when he breathes or any other noises?
