Is it texting...

...that is destroying people's ability to type? I'm no spelling bee champ myself, and I know my written english is far from perfect, but I can't believe some of the posts I read.

Is it texting or is it something else? Do many people post from their phones?

at my school we practice typing and i don't think ive used many acronyms when posting, because i think they are dumb.

LOL...I was just thinking the same thing Royden. I am not sure what it is... But it seems to be getting worse.

There is a great Movie called "Idiocracy" that is bascially Mike Judges forecast for the future... In the movie the human race stopped becoming smarter, and eventually completely dumbed down over hundreds of years to where the IQ of an average person is about the same as todays 2nd graders. It was a very clever concept for a film.

i hate it when im walking around the mall and i hear the kids saying "JK" or "lol" or "idc" etc etc etc. It is a lot easier to type it so everyone does it and they use lol to show that they are laughing, but why say laugh out loud while you are right next to someone >.<

I endorse this thread

my favorite is TTHCTFAL(talk to the hand cuz the face aint listenin

noslang.com is pretty fun. its a translator from "adult" language to "leet" language

all the kids who play A-LOT of video games say all of those acronyms like: lol, rofl, lmfao, imao, and the like. i think it is really stupid sounding and i blame it on video games.

I play a lot of video games, I am on the internet for a good part of my day, and I text with my phone. I also do not utilize spell check so what you see from me is straight out of my mouth and not mechanically corrected. I may make typo's on occasion, but I would think that my spelling is not as horrible as it could be, especially for my demographic. I rarely use "lol", let alone butcher my native tongue while trying to use shorthand and acronyms. Therefore I resent the sentiment that "my generation" is ruining our intellect as a whole and raping the language (though I heartily agree in most cases). Just don't assume that it is all of us.

I am 20 years old and female, by the way.

Sometimes it is hard to know on a forum whether or not English is their native language.

Now let me race this soap box down the hill real quick...
I once had a high school teacher address the class as a whole that she found it surprising that some members of the class were even able to make it into high school, still lacking major skills like grammar, spelling and penmanship. She was right... And even in the professional world today...It is not a rare occasion that I get a hand written quote from a client and I can't even read it.

Blame the schools? Blame the Parents? ... The kid? ... the Times? I don't know, I guess they are all to blame in some way.

definaty blame the texting for this mess. i myself am one to use these abreviations and acronyms but cant control it.....its taking over the world!!!
lol :D

that is a awesome movie....when a tv show called "ouch my nuts" comes out we are in real trouble.

Oh people! It is not just the kids! I have been reviewing job applications all week. It is scary! Email often suprises me. I think I am speaking to one of the youngsters and it turns out they are in their 40's, and all with a college degree!

also, when i write academic essays, i dont use the "text code" crap. some kids do use it, and i am in the freaking honors class. not as many in my class, but it still happens with the dumber ones, who are always texting in the middle of class and play video games every day of the week for like 3 hours a day.

I know what you mean Juli! At my last job a friend of mine showed me a few of the application letters that had been sent in for a position that would report to her. Not a single sentence was without spelling or grammar errors. And these were ones that HR thought were worthy of an interview - for an admin position. There was a time when typing was the number 1 skill for a admin, now you apparently don't even have to be able to form a proper sentence.

And, getting back to something SoCaliSon said; I do think you can tell the difference between people for whom English is a second language - they are the ones that try to spell correctly, with the real 1337 and chat speakers it's clear that they just couldn't be bothered.

And it's not just English - the same thing is happening to other languages. I think texting, chatting and emailing have dramatically lowered the standards from 'What would my -language- teacher think?' to 'ala dey no wut I meen'.

But what really makes me fear for the future of the written language is when I get a punctuation-less email from my cousin, who is an elementary school teacher...
