My male ambilobe is coming on great although very grumpy still.
What colour would you say his baring is? It's got a mix which seems unusual. He is only 6 months old so I assume it will change again.

Also. On another forum someone said the pads on the back of his head suggested he might be dehydrated. Can you use this as a way of telling and do you think he is?

im going to second what the doc said. ;)

sunken pads mean he isnt getting enough fat.

My panther had the same problem when he stopped eating. he had full plump pads, then they sunk in as he lost 5 grams..

feed more and always hydrate.. better to over water him, then under.

no photo?

shrunk pads could also mean they aren't eating enough to store fat

Yeah my panther is very lean and his pads are sunken in like yours. I am trying to fatten him up more and they are ballooning back up, it is just that they aren't eating a lot of fat. I am trying to getfat back on my guy because he likes to drop himself down off his free range and he has no cushioning fat to help break his fall so he has little sores everywhere and looks ugly  His tail is chopped off and he has a big scar on his head so I don't want him to look any uglier than he already does LOL :p JK

Yours looks like a blue bar ambilobe~ the black will usually disappear more as they get older. he does look a little sunk in on the head--

what do you use with regards to light/heat - what do you keep your temperatures at basking/ambient-- and what do you feed?

Cheers for the replys

UV 5.0, 25watt bulb

Basking temp is around 27c.

Crix, dubia roaches and locusts....... he is active and seems v healthy to me. I keep and breed veileds so I'm confident of this. I feed him everyday but I will up the amount and or feed him twice.
Are the fat pads nothing to do with dehydration at all then?

Do you mean a UVB 5.0 bulb and no basking or do you have one of those mercury vapor bulb things that do both? Also what brand? You could also raise your basking temp a bit, 27c(or 80.6f), is a bit too low. try for upper 80'sf (not sure what that would be in celsius)

Sorry, its is a 5.0 uvb (can't remember brand) and a 25watt basking bulb.
I agree on the temps being a bit low. I have been trying to raise them slightly but a 40watt gets to hot yet the 25watt I have in with the female panther is at 29-30 c which is what I want.
So I have ordered more 25watt bulb to try out, failing that I will have to look at getting stat on it.

Not sure if wattage is different over there, over here i use a 75W household bulb like this: http://earth911.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/light-bulbs.jpg

No need to buy the fancy "reptile heat bulbs"

How much of them do you feed? I have a 7 month old that can pound down 8-20 large crickets a day

also-- what is your gutload?
