Importing from Europe to Canada

Chameleons Canada

We have discussed many times the hassles involved on importing chams from our south neighbour . But since up here our options are not that many, I am wondering if importing from breeders in Europe might be easier.

Any one has any experiences to share? If you are a breeder in Europe and are interested on exporting to Canada, let me know, I am in!

I've actually heard it can be easier to import straight from Madagascar then from the US, go figure:rolleyes: I imagine you'd still have to go through all the CITES paperwork when shipping from Europe

Importing from Madagascar to Canada is doable (I don't want to say easy but is doable). However rare locales of panthers are hard to find. Also most of the chams are WC with the problems involved on it (parasites, etc.) plus to make it worth it you have to invest a bit of $ and import other species of animals, etc.

Importing to the States and then to Canada I understand its easier, they can re-ship and getting the paper work is faster than exporting CB animals born in the states (go figure), however, the work involved on getting the paperwork is what I think is not worth for our fellows in the States to go through. It's understandable, why bother exporting from the States when you can pretty much sale everthing internally?

Not sure if our European fellows might be interested in expanding their market or they have enought with the market there; the question is on the air.

Im trying to see if its possible if I can maybe import from Europe or America all the way to South Africa, the market is limited here and nearly every Panther you can buy here (Ambanja) is inbred!
Thats why I think importing is the only way to get what we want and in good quality but its gona take a couple thousands to buy it, it will be alot of trouble for papers and the transport costs are going to be heavey.

Well if any breeders feel like being the first to export to SA then I will defenitely be waiting right here.:D..... I wish:p

Just a few notes

We import export, and my comments are based on that.

- All the countires mentioned so far are CITES members, and follow CITES recommendations, usually by adopting laws which embody specific CITES recommendations.

- All exported CITES II animal need a specific export permit from the country they are being shipped out of. USF&W can take 2-5 months to issue that permit for CB animals, less for re-exported animals. Some countries flip that permit far more quickly. Within the Eurpopean Union, I believe movement between countries is rather easy.

- The required import permit can usually be gotten by the importer in far less time, but is still required, and usually must wait on the export permit.

- The various required permits and documents (inspections by USF&W leaving, veterinarian certificate, likely broker fees, import inspections, etc) can add up to $200-500 per shipment (one animal or 100) and that is before the actual cost of shipping.

- many exporters, this one included, have higher thresholds for export, and deposit requirements, that are usually not practical for a hobbyist. Our export minimum is $4K, with a 50% deposit.

Its never easy.

How would you get them straight from Madagascar? Wouldn't you need a vendor license since basically you are bying the cham whole sale?
