I'm getting licked

My ambilobe panther licks me every once in a while when I hold him. Do they do this for scent or smell?

Mine does it too and I've heard other people say their panthers do it as well. I know it has to do with their senses. Not sure if it's taste, or them feeling if the branch is safe.

Aesop licks pretty much everything before he crawls on to it, and will lick whatever he's currently on when he seems to be thinking (like if he's staring at a bug and trying to make up his mind if he wants to go for it or not)
