Well joining my home shortly after christmas will be a 5mo old blue bar ambilobe chameleon! He has been bought and paid for but until we return from out of town there holding on to him. I can't wait to see him and have him join our home. Any name ideas he is a male? and one more ? what cage size should I go with, I want to have one that I won't have to buy another one for him I was thinking 18x18x36.

Welcome to the forums :)!

18x18x36 is an ideal cage for a panther. Do you have all your light sources (UVB, heating) ready?

I named my new nosy be x ambilobe Ebenezer.
I had a big long list of names before I settled with that one, ahaha

Roscoe maybe?
What I did was go on babynames.com
and go to advance search, and search meanings, and names would pop up.

Like, search the meaning as "blue" and names with the meaning blue will pop up!
Nifty, eh?

He will eventually need a 2x2x4 cage. At five months I think you could probably put him in one. Just make sure he can find all his food.

I like naming my animals older names and ancient god names. Mine are named Pan and Isis

hehe mines Yogg 'Saron, (Yogg for short) ....its a world of warcraft lore thing....im a nerd...^^ but yeah 18x18x36 till 5-6 months of age then 2x2x4 is esential because panthers get big.(this goes for vields aswell)

I would like to give my $.02 on the cage size.

18x18x36 is an ideal cage for a panther.

18x18x36 if setup right can be plenty of room for a male panther chameleon. When I use this size I like to use hanging plants that allow the use of the entire cage. From top to bottom with lots of room to climb around. While I would not use ideal to describe the size. I would say sufficient.

He will eventually need a 2x2x4 cage.

At the same time , I would also tell a potential keeper that they would be much happier the larger you could provide for them. I would not go as far as say "need" a 2x2x4 cage. Most with a 2x2x4 cage only use about 2x2x3 if you count the pot for the plant and where the climbing material is usually started.

I completely see where both of you are coming from and the information is correct, I just thought I would give everyone another way to look at it. I have found over time it is not a concrete set of rules and many different configurations work. It is always important to observe the behavior of the chameleon to be sure it is working for them.

But it's sooo litttttle! :) I say if you have the room go even bigger! When he's an adult of course.

My mommy doesn't even like my chameleons very much and she wants to free range them eventually. I think it's because Pan is growing faster than Henry did and she thinks he'll be a lot bigger. :) She thinks his 2x2x4 is already getting too small (he's 4 months old and it's not) so she's talking about a nice big ficus tree.

When you have 35+ chameleons they look just fine. :p;):D

Free range is second only to Madagascar :D Bigger is always better, I agree completely.

I have my melleri in a 7ft x 3ft x 8ft free range. Coolest thing ever.

Well when you've got a crazy breeding business, it's a tad bit different. :)

You got the crazy part right, but I would call it an addiction rather than a business. I think you have to at least try to make money to be a business. :D

and I only have 6 adult panthers :)

Addiction is dead on! Crazy probably is too! :) I am still as obsessed and enjoying this as much as I did 3 years ago!

I want a Panther for Christmas! :D

I agree with both Ryan and pssh. They don't absolutely need that much room, but it is nice to have. I don't need a 2000 sq ft house, but I want one :p
I try to give my chams as much room as I can afford. I have five+ chams in my living room and it's starting to look like a jungle.

ROFL! yeah my climbing branches are bees knees..... ive got a reptisun 100000000 uvb bulb 2...and its one of the 48'......ok took that a little far....

No breeding for me this would be for a pet only, actually educational as we do educational animal encounters so he will get plenty of hands on love and attention! I'll go with the cage I can afford and get a little larger then suggested for them so he has more room to enjoy. Thanks for all the suggestions and help it is appreciated!
