If I rescue the Veiled

At PetDumb there is a veiled in the worst conditions possible, I have an extra enclosure at the moment, if I buy it will anyone buy it off me and give it a home?

Don't know if I will for sure, since mom is paranoid about shipping, but I might. I know though they'll most likely re-stock it in a year or so.

Buying a sick animal from a pet store is not rescuing -- it's putting $$$$ in the pockets of these big companies that don't give a crap about the animals they're selling. I'd also worry about shipping an animal that may not be in the best of health. JMO

I'm guessing your in the USA? if I was over there i would certainly give the poor mite a loving home :)

Would be a better choice to speak to the store owners about the bad conditions. Buying the chameleon doesn't change anything, but makes place for the next poor animal to be kept there same way. Until another cham owner takes pity on this poor little animal and buys it. That's what the pet store lives from. I won't give anyone money for an animal to "rescue" it.

The thing is, it is a terrible situation regardless of the choice. On one hand, you put money into their little greedy paws and help the little cham have a chance at life or you let the poor little cham die in hopes of them being discouraged in doing it to another poor little one. Do what feels best in your heart. Who knows, maybe it will grow on you a bit?

Your best bet is to try an educate the store employees I'n the reptile department on changes they could make. The one by my house used to be terrible and they constantly had chams and other reptiles that were sick and dyeing. You dont have to get arrogant with them or angry or things won't change. Like everyone says if you buy it that just shows a demand for them. Or try the store manager, most just dont understand. It may seam like a slow way to make change but witha little persistence it might work I know the one around my place is way better then they used to be and they actualy have healthy animals now. I know during this process I was asked to leav the store a few times after turning customers away from buying a sick animal, and giving them proper care information and if I knew someone who had what they were looking for or I had it pointing them I'n th right direction.

Just be sure not to get aggressive with them

I did try to tell them, they didn't care about some little girl informing them about anything.

unfortunately its not just "little girls" who's suggestions they keep hidden. many of us have been in that boat. its a great motivated action that you want to take, but for you investing the money, and than "pawning" it off sort-of-speak, on somebody else, isnt rescuing. it is rescuing them (yes) from a bad enclosure, but increasing stress by adding more trips and living places for them.

spontaneous decisions kill, so please, if you're going to do this. make sure you alone can handle reviving him up, and make sure you are willing for the commitment of another chameleon, make sure that you can commit to it's full life if by reasoning you are stuck with him.

i'm sure many would want to help and take him off your hands in the future, but lets remember the abundance of veileds in the usa, interests isnt as appealing to us who have veileds already (most of us do) as well lets remember that more than 3/4 of all us members already have chameleons and other herps to take care of.

again, i commend your heart and motives, but really level with yourself. i've seen a lot of spontaneous thinking and ideas in your posts which are all great for the most part. but there is alot involved, more than research can teach you when expanding your collection, breeding, co-habitations, etc.

IMHO, im just trying to help.

Actually, most of my ideas aren't spontaneous, I think a few months ahead of time, I was planning on PetDumbarses to get a chameleon since they haven't in about a year, I'm going to try a few more times to reason with the employee's and their boss, and I'd love to shut it down, they don't care and that store is the only one I can find decently sized crickets, they have other animals that're taken care of properly and quickly given good homes, it's only the Chameleons, I might just tell them that from now on I'm going to come in every day and take care of it.

than in all fairness, i apologize for assuming things. if thats the case, than why not invest quality in your collection and order something different to expand your experience with from one of our site sponsors. and in the meantime, start looking at feeder prices that you can order for your cham's preference?
i think its a nice thing to do for the cham to go everyday and take care of him, but where is your benefit other than the satisfaction of knowing you're doing something nice? you should be careful they dont take advantage of you, your not getting paid, you wont get the chameleon for free, nor will you get any ,other time of free thing. its strictly volunteer.

on a sidenote, and too everyone not just the OP, i'm getting pretty sick of seeing "bad pet store horror stories" frequently, guess what. WE WILL NEVER STOP IT, and we're only getting ourselves upset. just because this is a Cham forum, i think its completely bias to other species of animals whether they be exotic, birds, cats or dogs... it arent just chameleons that get stuck in bad conditions.

as far the owners and franchises who dont listen to our voice go, they dont give a damn about chameleons.. they dont give a damn about any of their live inventory but their money. to decrease cruelty to one species you care about, means you have to care and voice out against all animals. you have to abstain giving business completely to prove a point, when many others wont. and what good is abstaining from giving business when you need their products? hobbyist depend on local pet and exotic shops more so than supply shipments, so where does that leave us?

come to grips guys, it will never end, stop or slow down.

I'm fine with volunteer, my sis volunteered and I was going to join before I got a cham to a business where they rescue squirels, owls, snakes, etc and have volunteers take them to their house (enclosures and everything included) to take care of them until someone adopts them. You have not lived until you have had a baby squirrel in your hand cuddling with you. Anyway, I'd LOVE to take the pet store corporations and put them in a different habitat, like a man made desert with absolutely no water or plants that they have so little room that they can barely move. Sadly this is illegal to do it to HUMANS.

i would donate all i have to the 3rd world for a baby squirrel. i would give up every single one of my reptiles including chameleons, for a pet baby squirrel.

Haha if I can find the name I believe they have alot of places, might be one near you and you could partially adopt one.

as far as ontario goes, it is illegal to own and captivate native species without a rediculously expensive permit. my dream mammals are a pet beaver, otter, squirrel and skunk. so i'm out of luck for all of them.. and i'm not quite sure where i could put an otter lol

Posting this pic just to tease you.

I'm pretty sure you're allowed to as long as it's not actually yours, you're only volunteering anyway, or you could go to one of their volunteer's houses who has many to take care of and help.
