I got my Chameleon in October and they said he was a juvenile. He was thriving and happy until about 2 weeks ago. He started sleeping more and more during the day and eating less and less. The last tow days he has not left his bedding area and he has not eaten any of the superworms or meal worms I have offered him. Today when I came in to check him he was all black, and he was very upset when I picked him up to take pictures, but I am trying to figure out what is wrong with him. If anybody has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - I have a Panther Chameleon, he was a juvenile when I got him in October. I have had him for 4 1/2 months.
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? I handle him about once a week, just so he will be used to it. He really does not like it at all.
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? I feed him about 8 to 10 crickets a day, and 2 Super worms. 3 meal worms 2 to 3 times a week. Calci worms some days.
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? I am using ZooMed's Reptivite with D3, ultrafine super stick formula and I dust his crickets with it each day.
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? I use automatic misters that go off for 30 seconds every 2 hours during the day. We live in a very dry area with no natural humidity. I have observed him drinking many times from the different plant leaves around his enclosure.
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? His fecal looked great up until the last week or so, but I have not been able to find any poops in his cage for a week now. He has not been tested, I trying to decide if I should take him to the vet.
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. He has always seemed healthy and moved around his cage and ate really well. He is sleeping all day now and he has not eaten any of the worms I have offered him. I do think he is eating crickets because I do not find any in his cage.
Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? 24*18*36 Glass/Screen combo. Sides and top are screen.
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? Distance from UVB lighting to Branch? I am using the BioDude mixed spectrum LED light. Blue, white, and red. 1650 lumens. A 75 watt full spectrum UVA/UVB basking bulb. His lights are on timers that come one at 7am and go off at 7pm.
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? I have a Zoo Med environmental control center. It has 2 temperature sensors. I have one on his basking spot which stays from 77 - 80 degrees. And the other is in his bedding area and it stays about 72 degrees. The bottom of the enclosure is reading 67 with a hand held thermal sensor that I use.
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? My Zoo Med has a humidity sensor which is placed in the side of the cage. The humidity stays between 30 and 40 percent depending when the misters go off. The misters go off every 2 hours for 30 seconds.
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? I have a Shefflera tree, a small Peperomia obtusifolia
, a medium sized Black Raven ZZ plant, and 2 small climbing ivy's. He has the Bio Dude terra firma soil 8 inches deep. Several artificial climbing limbs and pathways.
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? His cage is located on top of a table against the wall in a room with lots of natural light. The top is approximately 4 feet from the ceiling. The air vent is on the other side of the room and their is no high traffic in our house. Only me and my husband and he is in my office.
Location - Where are you geographically located? I am located in Amarillo, Tx. Very cold and dry. We keep our house thermostat on 72 degrees.
I am sending some pictures I took this morning of his mouth and color. He does look normal right now and he just ate a cricket. But I thought I would take pics of his mouth in case it looks odd.
I also sent one of how he looked a month ago. He just doesn't seem himself. I read a blog that a lady said her Chameleons hibernate. I was wondering if he is trying to do this.
Thank you for any advise or help.
