I may be adopting a veiled.

Petsmart has a FEMALE veiled up for adoption. She is in a poor cage, with no UVB, and she's free for adoption.. why? Because she has some sort of arthritis.
I'm wondering if I should adopt this girl to try to make her life better, or not.

Any ideas?

its a great thing if u do. but if i was u(even tho it makes me sad to hear about her condition) i wouldnt do it becuz of the expenses. if i could get her arthritis medicine and vet visits free i wuld do it but otherwise i wouldnt

Well they said she's off medicine now, (I think?) and I'm going to ask if we can get one vet visit for free to have her checked.

that wuld be nice, but sorry its completely up to u and u alredy know my opinion, just wait around for someone elses opinion and im sure ull get what ur looking for

That 'Artheritis' is probably MBD (how many pet stores know what they are talking about). Vet visit is a great idea. Be cautious.

If it were me, Id avoid possible heartbreak and buy a healthy one from a breeder instead.

Arthritis? Or MBD?
Is this an animals someone brought in (they have to adopt those out .. store policy) or is it one of their animals that has developed this "arthritis"?
Either way you'll be adopting some vet bills and they aren't going to help.

I haven't asked, but it breaks my heart to see her in a 10 gallon aquarium, soil substrate, fake branch, and a bowl of water..

It's probably MBD, but her bones looked fine. She seemed plump, but after feeling her stomach I couldn't feel eggs.

But yeah, going to try to see if they will do an xray for free etc.

Well I know they LOVE Banfield, :p but I heard they do exchanges with some vet offices. I was going to look into seeing Richard Funk, I heard good things about him. Last time I went to Banfield, their exotics spec. was actually somewhat ... decent? I know, I know, I've heard the stories, and I'm sure they're true..

Thank you Brad.

Anyways, I'll be doing a ton of research and try to get pictures of her before I make the decision. I don't think she'll be gone anytime soon. Goodnight.

Syn you have such a big heart and I know you want to help, but I have an ambanja that has MBD. All the excellent vet I took him to could tell me was to give 0.01 cc daily of neocalgluon, put him in a low cage as he will continue to fall and hope for the best. I didn't know what I was taking on with this boy, but each time I have to force him to take the neocalgluon, or even to eat it just breaks my heart. If you do decide to take the little one make sure their vet gives you a couple of bottles of neocalgluon and a syringe so you can put it in superworms or roaches. That is how I try to get Ben to take his, and most of the time he will. Best of luck on whatever you decide to do. If you are going to take her the sooner you take her the better for the chameleon.

If you are going to take it it would probably be better to take it sooner than later. If you don't see any rubbery bones and difficulty in grasping and staying on a branch then some TLC might be just the thing. She definately will not be getting better at the pet store and you can offer her proper care with calcium dusted food.

She needs help. ALL living animals (even from pet stores) need soneone to take care of them. I would take her to your regular chameleon vet on the way home and get her a good check over.

Well the thing is, the regular cham vet I take her to ended up going to another vet place out of the city and I can't find them anymore. Laurie, I'll write that down.

Right now we're trying to see if the old rabbit cage we have can be basically cut in half and have a board go down the middle of it to house my other veiled and the female, seeings as it's kind of big in the first place.

The other thing is that if we do end up having to pay for the vet visit and she does need medicine, and it's TOO expensive, I might not be able to afford it. X-rays cost 200$ at some places.

If I do plan on taking this little girl to the vet - What should I expect? What questions should I ask? Does anyone know how much neocalgluon costs?

Don't trust Banfield. If you ask them anything they don't know about, they'll just ask the Pet Care department, and you'll end up with the same answer- that the cham has arthritis!

Do we live in the same town? PetSmart seems to have this issue all over the continent. Same story as yours in my town except theres 2 in the aquarium i speak of. Sad to see, but you'd more than likely be more upset if you took it in and tried to help it but it didnt work out. Maybe you could sneak a pic of it and others could tell you how bad off she is, maybe help you make your decision.

It's most likely MBD as I've been told. They call it arthritis so the customers who have no clue what MBD is get the general idea.

Well if I can help get a few more years on her I'll be content. I will ASK for pictures, she's in a back room where adoption animals go, and I wouldn't want to get into trouble at a store I sadly HAVE to use often. :(

Well, I've come to the decision I don't have the financial ability to take care of her, sadly.
But if anyone in AZ wants this little girl I can give you any information you need.

(If you'd like, I could use the new sponsor and ship her out to you, but I can't pay for shipping, so you'd have to pay for that and get it sent to my address or something, but only as a last resort, as she's not in the best shape.)
