I had a great idea to expand into a free roam

Okay so I got Optimus almost 2 weeks ago now and he's doing great, although I am very unhappy with his enclosure. It only opens up from the very top and from halfway down the cage. I will be ordering the 48'' tall one from LLL after I hear back from this craigslist poster selling his old one.

Anywho.....

I was thinking of hanging 3-4 pothos across that windows with those hooks in the ceiling and then I can use that curtain pole to secure those fake vines that you buy at the reptile store. I can open the top of Optimus' enclosure, maybe hook a bird ladder or wrap some vines up there and make a super highway. I would of course move off all my junk off of that window ledge. What do you think?

I think that's a fantastic idea! What you could also do is move some stuff on that lower shelf as well and add some ficuses and umbrella plants that connect to the pothos.

He'll be down from there in no time unless you take everything off the wall below the ledge. I free ranged my chams for almost a year, and let me tell you - they will find a way to get where they want, and it's not always where you want them. It's a great idea, just be extra cautious about cham proofing. If in doubt, assume it's unsafe and take extra precautions to keep him where you want him.

Ok thank you! Do you think I should buy another basking bulb to keep it warm up there, especially since it's winter and next to the window.

I think that is going to be a real neat area to do FR. Looks like your getting some advice to get it perfected... You will have to post photos as you get it going and so we can all see the outcome!! :)

I bought 2 small ficus and 4 pothos! a vine and some dowels!

Haha, awesome pictures, and nice setup. When I move into my apartment for college I am going to setup a free range. :)

Where would be a good place to setup a uv? I know everyone says to get the long tube one, which is what I have for his enclosure, but could a clamp one work?

I would say no, not yet- since she asked about it, decided and made it today!

lol I did not notice that
As for the clamp lamp type uv, I do not use them or know enough to suggest one. You could probably mount a fixture from the ceiling, facing the window since there is not much room to hang one.

can you mount one on the ceiling?? if so that would work perfect (or does any of the window spot open, or slide open to expose a screen??) anyway looks awesome, your cham will love you for it(you will notice that in time....they show you they are happy..dont know if you have seen my vids, my chams reward me by chasiing me down to climb on me..lol) maybe wrap a vine around the curtain pole for grip( you, yourself can stil have privacy since you have plants covering the window) so no curtain is nessasary.. cant wait to see the set up evole into your "ultimate completed mission":D lol

.........

It looks great the free range... Just from my own experience, its hard to water them on a free range and be careful they will always climb down on cord ext to keep exploring. So be careful or he will end up in another room possibly if the door is open and he has a route to it. Also it looks like you bought a lot of new plants, make sure to rinse them off as I think home depot and other plant places spray their plants with bug killers. Otherwise awesome nosy-be and its cool you are in the bay area also!

Thanks everyone!!! That was a bit hard setting it up, even at 25 y/o it's rough on the knees being up on that dresser putting those plants up there, and putting my dude up there too!!!

I'm not very keen with finding beams to hang a tube uvb light.... can anyone tell me why we are against using the clamp type uvb lights? My mom is using one for her baby sulcata tortoises, should I tell her to get a long tube one too?

Okay so if I get really bored one day....I could get really cham crazy and take some vines and loop them all the way across my room, and clear off all the creepy ass dolls that ive had since I was 10 and make some crazy long range awesomeness jungle. my room is so dark though, the window is at ground level because the house is built into the hill...I don't know how plants would do all the way around my room.
