I am getting a veil in an hour help!!

hey no such thing as a dumb question. Im like a sponge absorb everything!lol i save a lot of these post for references. if like i plan to breed i have a folder with them in it. just as an exmple. i also have a folder on roaches and their care.
 
It doesn't really seem to me like you've done any research at all.
Aside from knowing that a male veiled should have a spur on it's hind foot, you don't seem to know anything about keeping this very specific, very advanced level reptile.
You purchased an enclosure that will be fine for a short time....provided you don't let it get too hot in there...but not the recommended one.
You purchased a compact UVB light that could actually harm the animal....none would be better for the short time it will take to get the right one.
I'm not trying to be mean, but it's this kind of impulse aquisition that really infuriates me, and makes me wish these animals were not available in the pet trade at all.
Did you just wake up this morning and decide to get a chameleon?
Then you ask to be walked through every remedial step ... :confused:
My advice to you is to get busy reading. There are thousands of pages of information here...search for it. You have months of learning to do in minutes now that you went ahead and purchased the animal.
Good luck. I hope you are successful, for the chameleons sake....but this project has started completely backwards.

I completely understand what you are saying. I actually have been talking to what i thought was someone who knew about these creatures for a week now asking a lot of questions and getting what i thought was prepared to own one but since i found this site i have relized that this person has no idea WTH they are talking about and i have to now question everything i might have thought i knew:( Honestly i just found this site today and i am really thankful that i have. This is the first one i have owned i am very dedicated to keeping it healthly but i feel i was so misinformed now that i have to start from square one. i am a total worry wart and freak out so i kinda lost control and it was really reasuring having ppl who know about them help me with questions. I am sorry if you feel i am ignorant and honestly i probably am now but i feel that maybe offering me help now that i have it would be a little better than shunning me and maybe loosing the cham because i couldn't get the info i needed. i do appreciate your honesty though thanks

I'm sorry, man.. For this i gotta agree with Brad.
Your setting is all the way a "Petco" recommendation care sheet.
This is exactly the setup that i had long time ago when i am a naive and impulsive chameleon owner.

I believe you post a thread about caring for your cham b4 at this forum..
I hope you'll do your best following the advise of these people.
They all learned from trial and error in caring for this wonderful creature.

All the setup that you show are fatal to your cham's health..
my suggestion is bring everything back, including the chameleon to the petco.

set up the right husbandry, get all the right equipments, and then the last thing to do is get the chameleon.
If you already attached to this cham.. my suggestion is get everything right by tomorrow.. fast.. knowing that you might buy him from petco.. i'm guessing this baby has been in a glass cage for a while.. so there is a possibility that yours already ill.

Prolonging her in that type of enclosure will prove to be fatal for her.
My first chameleon immediately develop a URI in 3 days in that enclosure and following Petco care sheet.

So, for her sake, i hope you'll do your research.
Sorry if we sound harsh.. but we are passionate about this animal..

hey ridin a bike, driving, owning a cham u gotta start somewhere. the only difference is the life of the animal. i do feel bad u wasted so much money. even the best herp owner did just wake up a supper genius. just get the right light and take it a step at a time.
 
if possible by tomorrow (no more than 3 days later) get:
1. screen cage best size in my opinion is 24" 12" 24"
2. reptisun 5.0 tube and zoomed basking lamp
3. branches.. for now a fake plant will suffice (try to get real plants next week the
latest)
4. Mister (mist at least 3 times a day, allow drying period be4 another misting.
mist with warm water. at least 10 minutes permisting. yes be prepared.
the cage will b wet wet wet.)
5. li'l dripper
6. herptivite MTh, repcal w/ d3 TF, minerall-0 WSat
7. small crickets (12 to 18 crix a day dusted).
----------
after this, take a deep breath,.. and be prepared for another waves of requirement. specially since you are getting a female... it's a whole different game with a female chameleon.
They are much more sensitive and requires more attentions.

actually i posted right before i had to go get it which is when i found this site. i got it from petsmart and they have had it for a week and a half. there are a lot of different opinions on how to care for these animals i have read a lot on the internet but a lot of it is conflicting. i understand you are passionate about them but i feel your all being a little harsh, I though maybe i could get some better info here not judgement but i guess i was wrong. sorry that i thought i was doing reaserch and was mislead, sorry i came here to get the right advice and make sure i take care of it the right way. you guys have really ruined the experiance for me. i guess you all would rather have me return it so it can die at the store since they obviosly have no clue how to take care of it either so i guess maybe that's what i will do if i don't kill it through the night since i am so stupid and all. thanks everyone that was actually helpful and nice.
 
wow i didnt think i was rude. all i said was i felt bad u bought the glass cage and wrong light. i say keep the animal and take it a step at a time.
 
What everyone is upset about is that you asked us for our advice before you bought it. In my first post to you I said two things. No matter what they say at the store, get a reptisun 5.0 tube and get a screen cage, no glasss. You did the exact opposite. If your not going to take our advice, don't ask for it!! You need to get off you pity pot and do what's right for the chameleon. this isn't about how YOU feel.

Thank you, i actually had a lady holding a mesh cage for me at petco but she didn't put my name on it and they sold it. i was confused because they told me that the mesh would be really hard to keep the temp and the humidity up so this is what they suggested. The guy assured me it was a male i have read on it and didn't want a female because of the laying eggs, i did know about the spur but he said it was to young to really tell. i haven't been able to really inspect it because he was stresses from the move. thank you again i am reading as much as i can i really want to take care of it they are absolutly beautiful. i was severly mislead in the care department and i appoligize for asking so many questions i just would hate if anything happened to it.
 
Well yes Mesh can be hard to keep the humidity up but that is where live plants and misting come into play. Their fake plants and water dishes they use themselfs is no right way to do it.

But with a mesh and the proper setup with live plants and misting either by pressure mister or by a automated system will keep them Humiditiy up.

Temp in the basking spot is important while having cooler areas in the enclosure so your cham can go to if she needs to cool off. This is hard to do with glass. I recommend that you make the basking spot directed to the front corner of the door where the front vent will help with air flow for the time being. The rest of the enclosure should be high to mid 70's while the basking spot around 86. While in a mesh it would be mid 70's. The glass is going to indeed keep temp high. Humidity should be 50-65% average. Misting the inside of the enclosure you will no doubt see how it will increase humidity is just seconds after misting.
 
You have to realize that about four of the people that have been responding to you probably have a combined sixty years exp. with chameleons. How much exp do you think the pimply faced kid at petco had? Their telling you what they've been told to tell you. They have exp. with chameleons for one or two weeks at a time. Look through these threads and run a search on petco or petsmart and read the responses. All of them start out like yours and a few weeks later they post a thread that starts out something like this... Help-chams making funny noise, help, cham has extra elbow..help, cham is sleeping all day. Sorry for the harshness, we've just all heard it before and are tired of listening to chameleons from petco,petsmart dying. All of us will try to help you if you'll take our advice honestly. right now humidity is 65% and temp is 70 in the cage. I live in Utah and right now we are in a cold winter. i really did have every intetion of getting the mesh but the lasy sold it, and then when i was at petsmart with the "so called expert" he made it sound like it would be very difficult to keep temp here in a cold climate and i needed something to put it in. I was going to wait for a few months for it to grow a little more and get a nice size mesh cage i figured it would be ok in a smaller environment while it was small.I am really trying to learn all i can to make it right. i am gonna call another petco tomarrow and see if they have any cages i just hope that it is the right one for this area.
 
Yea, like some people have already said before, I would try to leave it alone as much as possible for the first few days. Besides watering/misting and feeding I wouldn't really even go around it. You should also try to feed it without taking it out.
 
Oh, and make sure he gets exposure to both lights. He will probably spend most of his time under the heat lamp so make sure while in his basking spot, he also receives the UV.
 
This little one is about 6-7 inches with tail included the cage they had was i think 24x18x12 mesh at petco i will try to find it tomarrow i wall also look there for the tube light, so a list of theings i need to get to do thid right.
1. mesh cage
2. water dripper
3. tube light( they did have the holders but not the bulbs for these they were $30.00 do u suggest a better place to buy them cheaper?)
4. new thermometers(probe kind)
5. basking light seperate from tube light
Could u give me a name brand that i could buy and wattage?
the reason i bought there and not local mom and pop shop was because they offered a 14 day gurantee where no one else did. The guy that helped me actually said he has Chameleons so i guess thats why i felt i trusted him.

I am using distilled water is that ok or should i use tap water? i have the green squares for cricket food and water gel and i am learning about the dusting i bought some stuff for that to. if there is anything i missed please let me know. i really fdo appreciate all of your help i just feel i was misleaded and am trying to fix it please just give me a little credit for trying, i am atleast still here trying to learn:)
 
Okay, the good news is you're going to start getting a really good situation set up for this new friend of yours.

You need to know that the people here really want you to succeed.
If you could know the number of times a new person comes on with a similar...or much worse situation....you'll see, after awhile it just becomes too much and then the next one (you) ends up being the victim of my frustration.
I think you should spend some time reading threads in the enclosures forum.
Get a good plan formulated for your cham's home and then we will help you with any questions you have.

He or she lol (i will look harder tomarow) is absolutly beautiful i have been watching him for a few days and they said he was very calm now he was stressed out tonight and did hiss and lunge at me ( scared the begeebies out of me) but he is now sleeping and a light green color, BTW everyone i asked said they don't bite hahahahaha i found out today from this site that it is not true lol. do u guys just put you hand in and pick them up or do u try to coax them on your finger? i don't want to stress him chasing him all over if i need to get him out.
