I’m concerned my he may be a she.

Hi,

Just looking for some guidance, I’ve had my Cham for over a year now he is around 14 months old and everything has been going great. He was sold to me as a boy and has obvious spurs on his feet. However, just recently he has been at the bottom of his tank which is very out of character. He’s eating ok so I’m not concerned that he’s looking for food. I thought he could possibly be constipated, so he’s had a warmish shower to see if that gets things moving for him. His diet has stayed consistent, so I’m not to sure if it would be this anyway as surely constipation would have happened before. However, after researching online all signs are pointing that he/she might be looking for a place to lay eggs or even find a male hence why he’s on the floor. So now I’m here doubting myself, panicking as I don’t have a nesting box and the last thing I would want is if he is a she, is for her to become egg bound. So do I need to rush out and get a nest, any help would be much appreciated.

You’ve got a very handsome boy. :) His casque looks a bit odd to me though. If you’re able, could you fill out a help form and have your husbandry checked?

Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By providing this information you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to answer all these questions, but the more you provide the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile veterinarian who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnosis of your chameleon's health.

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
  • Location - Where are you geographically located?
Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Please Note:
  1. The more details you provide the better and more accurate help you will receive.
  2. Photos can be very helpful.

Thank you both! Makes you feel like the worst parent, doesn’t it. I’ve booked in with the vet thank you!

Your boy has very strange but beautiful coloration. He has a odd appearance, I see some traits usually associated with females.

I do not see any significant indicators of MBD other than the size and shape of the casque but even that isn't screaming MBD.
I do not see any spurs.
I do see some horizontal markings we typically associate with females but also the vertical stripes of a male.
I struggling to determine if he's obese or if his legs are just swollen.

Can you post more pics?

Thank you! He’s in for a check up tomorrow! It was never mentioned last time I went in He summer, but fingers crossed he has a happy and healthy life and I’ll do all I can to ensure that.

Yes its "light" MBD. The bones are growning bowed, but are not the horrible " limbs have had several broken bones". Ive seen countless threads with the title "lazy chameleon" and one look at the pick and you can see the cham has 2 elbows per limb and cant climb. OPs isnt close to that, but correction needs to happen now so that the bones can firm up (they will always be slightly warped) and start growing correctly again.
