Hey all! Im wondering about over supplementation, My Chams(5-6 month old Veiled) Urate is orange/yellow but he drinks all the time, I have aquazamp with a raind dome and I mist 5-6 times a day keeping his humidity between 40-70% just so its known that I do water I think I may be over suplementing. He eats 7-10 crix a day all dusted and maybe 1-2 silk workms every other day and a hornwork every 2 days plus I feed supers and butters 1-2 a day(I dont dust them). any ideas?

Well, that depends. What supplements are you using exactly? What is the exact amount and schedule? Orange/yellow urate is indicative of dehydration. If he is drinking alot, and still dehydrated, that could indicate sickness, or parasites. Filling out the help form would be great to see what it may be.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled/male/about 5 months(Camimom gave some help there)
Handling - Barley, just to clean his cage and take pics about 1 time a week.. hes a grump little dude
Feeding - 7-10 crix a day(throughout the day to make sure there are no roamers) all gut loaded on carrots, greens and flukers gutload, silk worms and horn worms(both from mulberry with mulberry food) 1-2 every day for the silks, 1 every 2 or 3 days for the horn. Super worms gut loaded with carrots, and butter worms every other day if he wants them not guut loaded
Supplements - yuuup this is where I went wrong.... just checked my supps and the repcal calcium with d3 in it, I was useing every day didnt notice the d3, and a multi vitamin 2 times a month. plus d3 supps 2 times a month
Watering -aquazamp rain dome and hand misting 4-7 times a day and yes I see him drink
Fecal Description - waiting for vet to come back with paraqsite check and its a nice dark brown with yellow orange urate


Im not gonna go into cage info because if im correct Ive allready found the problem. but I will note that his humidity is between 40-70% in a reptibreeze with a reptisun 5.0 and a basking spot of 91.5 degrees

How long have you been using that schedule with the supplements?

for about 2 weeks and 2 days I only supp on the crix

In the pics I find, the cham doesnt seem severely dehydrated, or in poor health at all. Have you tried giving him a good long shower? Could help get him hydrated. I would recomend it, since its not going to hurt anything.

Two weeks is not that bad, but he probably has quite a bit of D3 built up in him. Cutting out D3 until he his system is clean of it is what I would do.
Repashy calcium plus is awsome. It contains D3 however. I would give plain calcium for a month or so before giving the repashy. That way you get him zeroed back out, and start with a clean slate. Im no nutitionist, but I have had supplement issues, and thats just my take on it, and what I would do. Maybe someone who knows more about it will have more in-depth info

yeah, Im gonna lay off the supplements for a few days see how he gets I hae a strai calcium supp. ill give him that and see how he goes! yeah hes a pretty handom fella! he was pretty bad when I got him... ill take him for a shower as soon as he lets me.

I'd also try giving him a good long misting, something like 10-20 minutes for a couple days, see if that changes his urates. If he's been over-supplemented then the extra water will help flush out any excess.

Thanks olimpia! I'll give it a shot, I'll set up one of my rain dome times for a bit longer see if it helps. I just love the little guy and I want him to be healthy!

I've read that sometimes, chameleons won't poop until they've produced enough fecal matter so their urate sort of dries out inside the animal and can look yellow/orange even though hydration is good.

How often does he poop? How big are those crickets you are feeding?

the crix are smal to medium.. and hes quite a healthy pooper if i must say.
