Huge eyes!

Alright, now we had JUST came home and we went to inspect our chameleons and show them some love. Now, we approached the male and to our astonishment his eyes were bulging! About three times the norm! Of course, we freaked out, but then he sucked them back in and their normal size again. I laughed, my girlfriend almost cried, and we were wondering. Is that normal? We use a 75w blacklight in a 2'x2'x3' cage.

why blacklight, id reccomend normal fluorescent to be honest....

Yeah, I don't recommend a black light. UVB + regular incandescent will give your chameleon what he needs.

I think the huge eye bulge is a cleaning thing. It's definitely freakish. I would suggest misting more for a bit to make sure he's got them cleaned to his satisfaction.

Do you have a UBV light or just the blacklight?
Basking light?

Maybe just filling out the form would be best so everything is in one spot and not a bunch of posts so we can best help you!

Cage Info:

Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Chameleon Info:

Your Chameleon - Veiled, male and one year old
Handling - Everyday for about 15 minutes
Feeding - Evening and morning feeding, if he decides to eat. Crickets, Superworms, and Hornworms. Gutload them with sweetpotato, cauliflower, potato, carrots, and brocolli.

Supplements -Calcium, and multivitamin once a week.
Watering - Dripper and I see him drink once or twice a week.
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Very awnry but likes to move about and is calm for the most part


Cage Info:

Cage Type - Lighting is 75w incadescent blacklight for evening only
Temperature - 83 degrees fahrenheit daytime, 78 at night.
Humidity - Very adequate.
Plants - Fake plants
Placement - He's on a counter with plenty of ventilation but nothing to drop temperatures lower than normal. High traffic only at night. For about an hour.
Location -California


Current Problem - Eyes were bulging really huge, but then he sucked them back to normal. ANyone else had this abnormality? Is it normal?


We have the 75 watt because it's night time over here. Haha. I just wanted to see if anyone had this abnormal problem? His cage is clean and misted. We just found it a wierd action.

My little lady used to do that (from what it sounds like)

What i did was made sure to mist her quite often, around her eye but not hard just so some water is on them or put them in the shower (make it like shower warm not hot or not cold) and really give them a chance to wash their little eyes out

I figured out my little Fran just had something in her eye and she got it out after a few showers!

so do you have a UVB and basking light for day time then? Why a blacklight? i have never heard of such a thing being used in a chameleon cage!

Yes, I'm very worried about your lighting. You need a bulb that provides UVB. That means a special bulb, not something you can buy at a party store. You also need a heat bulb and, interestingly, that can be bought at the grocery store.
