how to get a chameleon out of a tree

so i bought a new hibiscus today and decided to put together a couple of outdoor cages since the nights have been so mild. so i had both of my jacksosns in the same japanese maple, probably 15ft high 15 ft wide.

so im sitting in my front lawn repairing a panel and constructing a cage and a neighbor of mine come over and starts talking to me about video games and prometheus (apparently its going to be an alien prequel) so im trying to work on the cage keep an eye on the chams and hold a conversation. slowly but surely the male makes his way toward the female and she scoots way up the tree while im not watching.

so i move the male to a smaller tree and we continue talking, im hoping she will just make her way back down while i finish the cage becuase the male isnt there and the branches shes on are loosing light. i check on her and in another 5 min or so and shes even higher. and in a spot where a step ladder isnt an option and my extension ladders have nothing stable to lean on.

so out of fear of breaking branches i get my sisters 110lb bf to climb up. after about 5 more min shes make her way up to tippy top.

so a couple hours pass and its getting dark and shes not moving down. i consider getting a pole but there are so many twisty branches. then i walk in the front door look up at the ceiling and i see my answer. an elmo balloon.

like reverse fishing. one its floating instead of sinking and two im not baiting her im just trying to scare her down. so i hook the balloon to a roll of extra ribbon and try to float it up at just the right angle (becuase its windy) and get it caught on a branch right next to her. after about 10 min SCORE right on target. so its got the big elmo eyes on one side and on the other its mirrored in which case she could see herself so either way its a threat. that plus it flapping in the wind. she at first just turned around and hid on the other side of the branch, but the constant moment eventually spooked her down.

so next time you lose your cham up a tree, head out and get yourself an elmo balloon. sponge bob may be equally if not more terrifying.

agreed! this would be the best solution by far lol

pfffft! it would be even worse for me to have not let them out on such a wonderful day :p

i could just not not let my chameleons up a tree. at least i know how to get em down now. ONE DAY FERRET ONE DAY! your chameleon is going to be stuck up a tree and youll remember! and you will rue the day you ever questioned me letting my chameleon get out of reach! for on that day you will go and buy an elmo balloon and you will thank me. hahah lol :p

I had my iguana go up a tree when the petsitter let her out of cage when I was a kid. Took her two weeks to get hungry enough to come back down (elm leaves weren't working for her apparently). So I've already learned that lesson. My chams have an outdoor cage so I don't have to worry about them and they are out in nice weather as much as possible. Glad yours decided to come back down. :)

LOL!!! Yeah, not taking them out on days like this, guessing you have about the same temps, is blasphemy!!!

I lost a female panther for a few days. When I found her she was way at the end of a branch that was unreachable. I just used the water hose to squirt cold water her way and get her back toward the tree. Spraying it up into the air letting it come down in the tree may work too. Although, some of the chams I had would try to get even higher into the water when I watered them so maybe not:p

Funny story.
