How long is too long

Waldo is out on his mini free range today and has been out there for a couple of hours. Now typically he will always venture back into his cage before now but he is in La la land staring outside trying to come up with an escape plan I am sure :). This is a day after he had his first outside experience so that may also be a factor in his day dreaming/escape scheme...LOL

Anyway his mini FR does not have heat lamp or UV so just wanted to check and see if I should take him off and out him back in his cage. I really don't want to be the bad guy as he is just staring to turn around ever so slightly on the thought I might just be ok. He can go back at anytime as I have a vine going from the cage to the fr.

When he needs it, he'll go back.

If you find hes spending alot of time on his free range, you should hang some lights for him.

Thanks! Well I was going to add lights but I wanted him to go back to the cage for that and eating to try not to turn his fr into a permanent thing.
Not to mention I am trying to keep his place as pleasing to the eye as possible as to please the better half as well :). I only open up the cage once a day for him right now to venture out. He has always gone back in on his won within an Horus time. But since it was much longer this time I just wanted to check.

The more you let him free range, the less hes going to want to be in his cage.

;)

If you google some stuff, you might be able to get creative and make his free range pretty. :D

Depending on how crafty you are, you could get some nice fixtures, hang them from the ceiling, add some pretty vines and plants, and make it permanent.

I have thought about that too but I have 4 dogs that don't like to play nice. I typically have a gate up in that room to keep them from being in there during the day but we all go in there at night to settle in and with some tv. I have been contemplating hard on making our indoor pond area a large enclosure for him. He would have MUCH more room but.....it is my understanding from Todd at LYR, that I would need to get a 4 foot 4 or 6 bulb fixture for UV lighting in order to make sure it penetrates down far enough and wide enough. Just still trying to figure out the details and finances.

My guyz have never found their way home, I always have to put them back in their cages.
But my free range is pretty complex, and lots of distractions, plus, all the cages look the same!!

I wait till noon to let them out.

I dont have any extra lights for the free range, I just have to know when it's time for them to go home.

In the evening, I can just let them sleep on the free range and take them home in the morning.

We wait until about 1:30 to let our boys out and put therm back in around 5. If its Friday or Saturday we let them sleep in the free range and put them back in the morning, around 7:30am.

Do you have a basking lamp and UV in the FR?

How do you feed them on a permanent free range?? Just let crickets roam around your house??

Thats the one thing that I always questioned about free ranges.
