How do you experienced breeders feed and care for a breeding female?
I'm working with a group of wild caught quads. They've been in my care for almost a year. Of the group of females, one was gravid on import and the rest were babies ranging from 12g to 20g.
How often do you feed your breeding females? I have been feeding the females as much as they want every day but I am thinking that might not be such a good idea. My last clutch was 29 eggs (a HUGE clutch for a quad) and it was touch and go for the female for awhile. She needed oxytocin to get started and the vet tech added 100g to her weight when she wrote it on the chart so she was overdosed with oxytyocin. She was a mess and trying to lay non-existant eggs for about a week after laying the clutch. On top of that, I doubt any of the eggs are any good--too many eggs to properly calcify.
I give calcium every feeding, a very light dusting of MinerAll Outdoor once or twice a month and a very light dusting of Reptivite once a month plus a drop of vitamin A from a human gel cap once a month or two. When I dust with anything other than pure calcium, I will cut it with calcium so they get very little supplements.
Thanks.
