how do you consider yourself an experienced keeper.

i was wondering how you consider yourself an exp. keeper. do you have experience with a broad range of species, or just keep some species and read alot of books and just know alot about the animals. ive always wondered that.

id say if you have kept at least 2 species for more then a 2 years.



and done it perfectly, and perhaps through in raised a clutch of eggs....id say thats pretty damn good.


most keepers are novice to intermediate.

im still super novice.

I'd say I'm moderately well experienced with panthers, having had quite a few over ten years, including breeding. However, I've also happily had very few issues / illnesses to deal with, so I'm NOT experienced in dealing with MBD, URI, etc since I've not encountered these things directly. By the same token, I'm not whatsoever experienced with vields or any other chameleon, having only ever read about them. I am quite sure there is a difference between being well read on a topic and being directly experienced.
Kinda like Julirs comment. Reading about how to drive doesnt mean you wont stall and grind the gears when you first learn clutch standard. I also think keeping a chameleon for two years isnt really enough to call yourself experienced. Im sure there are people inadvertantly doing a poor job of keeping their chameleon, but it manages to live two or three years (instead of 7 or 8 years) anyways. Heck my first chameleon lived to be 7+ and I know for sure I didnt always do everything right, especially in the beginning. I'm still learning! I will gain experience, but will never consider myself an expert.

I will never really consider myself all that experienced- there is still so much to learn. Do I think I could handle almost anything that is thrown at me? Probably. A lot of my experience is second hand from reading the forums.

We have a seriously awesome tool here. All of you amazing senior members help to build it.

I think that advanced experience is a mindset and an "I can do this" attitude coupled with knowledge and support from fellow keepers when you are unsure.

i think all the answers are good. i consider myself a super duper novice. ive only had 1 cham for 1.5 yrs. and my melleri for about 2.5 months.

Since I havent went through many of the trial and error type problems Ive found keeping chameleons....easy. All credit is due to this forum and the member who share thier knowledge....So am I a "experienced" keeper?

I do have 5 panthers and 1 veiled and again thier success is due to this forum....not experienced keeper....just a informed keeper

ive only had to deal with coccidia. not a pleasant experience. other than that its pretty simple with great thanks to all of the forum members.

Hi,

in my opinion a experienced keeper should have make experiences with minimum one species a longer period and he should breed them successfully.
