How do chameleons change color?

I know they have crystals in their skin that react to light and change because of stress and pressure but what else is there to know am I wrong?

@Thatcher ... @Klyde O'Scope said..."Next you'll be asking why they change color... Cuz they feel like it, and as everyone knows, If it feels good, do it!"...do you believe this?
I think it depends, if the cham is chill colors it is probably happy or feeling the absence of stress and if it is stressed colors then it doesn't feel good to change them, or maybe its their last resort to feel better or scare you away.

Do I believe, "If it feels good, do it"?
If it's legal, between consenting informed adults, and harms no-one, then yes.
Beyond that, it depends.

Do I believe chameleons change color because they feel like it?
The people who write the articles seem to think that's at least one reason. 🤓
Beyond that, it depends. I haven't studied that specific aspect of chameleons, but my impression/interpretation of what I have read suggests to me that color-changing is a complex process that may involve both voluntary and autonomic functions.

You? (What do you believe?) 🤨
