How bizarre!

We have a bunch of silks just now and a few days ago one started to cocoon. He must have gotten disturbed by one of the other worms as he stopped spinning. The next day I went to clean them out and see this! The poor little guy had stoped spinning put continued to pupate! Taking bets now for if it'll hatch or not, he's still alive in there!

I had one of those too! It was moving for a few days and it stopped so I threw it away yesterday! And I have seen them before also.

Awwww! I'm keeping it till it dries up anyways :D or I might just feed it to Teal'c tomorrow since its super nutritious!

I have seen a few of these but don't remember any hatching. They start to stink after a while, lol! I have also had a 'double' cocoon last year - a huge cocoon that didn't hatch and when I cut it open there was a pair of moths in there and one had laid eggs too. Sadly they both died whilst stuck int the cocoon unable to get out. Strange thing is that I don't remember any spinning that close together!

Wow that is strange! A bit like a double yolker! Poor moffies though :( Were the eggs fertile in there? Did they hatch?

Not a lot is more complicated than a proper insect metamorphosis. So much can go badly wrong. There are always some unfortunately disabled moths or those that don't get to be moths in the first place. This guy won't hatch, I'm 99.9% too...

I've had some like this hatch before. Mine also hatch if I cut open the cocoons and take out the pupae (I prefer it because I can tell if they are still alive.)

I've only really had 1 cocoon that didn't hatch so I had to cut it open to see what was inside, it was indeed dead but I think it didn't get to cocoon fully. All other ones have hatched out pretty soon after cocooning, about 10 days I think and were all healthy! I'm going to keep it for a couple of weeks at least just to see! If nothing else, it'll be a nice treat for Teal'c that she doesn't get very often :)

Well this morning I came downstairs and it had hatched! I checked on it last night about midnight so must have been small hours of the morning. It's a female but her wings are furled and havent opened out properly. She still had bits of the 'cocoon' either side so I picked them off gently.
