How best to feed?

Hi again :D As per my previous post we have finally seen poop!!!! Hopefully he is starting to eat now. Anyway, what is the best way to feed? Not to sure about offering every day if there is still food in there. Really hoping no-one is going to say remove old food as they are locust hatchlings so very small amongst LOTS of foliage/branches etc - it really is a case of now you see us now you dont!! I am trying to contain the worms in a repti dish.

So.... if I can still see locusts wandering around do I feed? Once he eats properly and starts to grow I would like to get into a feeding routine but my main concern at the moment is getting to know him and getting things right.

Showed my whole family his poop this morning tho - much to hubbys disgust ;)

Thanks again - really appreciated

feed them in a bowl plus locusts aren't good staple feeders

If he is in the UK they feed them alot over there. Why do you say they are a bad staple? I don't know about the locusts but I know they say crickets will nip at sleeping chameleons. That would be one of my concerns with leaving the bugs roaming. I would say no, if you keep seeing them wander, then let him eat those instead of adding more.

Thanks. Yes he is uk and that is main reason for locust over crickets as they also sleep at night and don't tend to bite the animal. I have added a small pot of calc worms but no interest shown.

Plus locusts and grasshoppers are way meatier than a cricket, if anything I would say they are a much better staple than crickets! A friend and I were chatting about someone who is thinking about breeding locusts over here for heavy distribution, like crickets, and I just think that I would be so interested in buying them. You may have to clip those back legs but they are meatier and the big ones can probably fit in so much gut-load.

I would eventually love to feed by hand but it has been a struggle to just get him to eat! Still not actually seen him eat but guessing he now is. He also having a good wander around his Viv today :)

legs

for my chameleon i deleg whatever he eats and then hide them that way he is getting the hunting expeirince and i know that they wont get away! Plus there are sometimes problems with legs anyway so i cut all the leg off of what he eats. and as for worms, they cant get away as fast so im ok with them too. if he dont eat the bugs, you can collect them or not worry as much because they cant get to him without legs!

I would set up a tub or milk carton type feeder so that you can control the food more easily. (I don't like cups because the chameleons can't really hunt for the food.) With a tub (I like shoe box sized) the chameleon can still hunt for the food but you can keep track of the insects too. Chameleons also seem to be more willing to eat from tubs than cups.

That would be awesome, but they are illegal to ship over state lines from what I am told. They are big pests!

Yea, I think the guy we were talking about wanted to set it up here in Florida, so at least I would be very happy! lol But it's a shame because my guys go wild when I've come back from the wild with grasshoppers, it's so much more exciting than those stinky ol' crickets!

I'm in the uk and they are a good staple diet and chams pig out on them, there easy to dust, easy to notice if they are still afew lose in the viv, so many positives to locust and one huge bad on, the price!!! Crickets are a third less. Personally use everything shake up you chams diet keep it exiting for him/her
