How am I doing?

Hey guys, if you have been keeping up with all my posts you'll know all the updates and troubles I've had that were found and fixed but I think I have finally figured this whole chameleon care thing out. Now don't hate but yes my veiled chameleon (Smeegle) is my first reptile but I've spent time researching loads... ANYWAY I could use some opinions on how I am doing and what still needs improvement.

Enclosure: Smeegle (Juvy) is in his 24 x 24 x 36 Custom Polished Wood Cage with 1/4 inch chicken wire (Standard)

Humidity: I hand mist his cage 5-6 times a day for about 30 seconds to keep humidity up high.

Cleaning: I try to keep stress down and only clean about once a week. If I see "droppings" I will take it out of the cage with a set of tongs.

Plants and Sticks: I use about 20 branches and 4 plants. I have an Ivy Heidra Vine draping over a few sticks. I have a dragon tree and a Bonsai tree at the bottom. I use a Ficus ( the one without sap ) towards the top. He has lots of places to hide and bask.

Lights: I got a 75W Basking bulb 6 inches from the top of cage and a REPTI-SUN 5.0 Mini Compact (Newer Version)1 inch from the cage.

Supplements and Feeding: I feed crickets brown and black with a pinch of calcium every day, herptivite 2 a month, and D3 2-3 times a month. (He is "afraid" of other feeders? I bring them to him VERY slowly and he opens his mouth and hisses? I've been trying with Hornworms, blood worms, mealworms, wax worms, dubia roaches, and blue bottle flies. He refuses all but crix?? I tried not feeding him until later but he still refuses all things but crix?)

Chameleon Info: His drops are solid black/brown with a clear and white substance and very occasionally a small orange spec. I find him towards the top of his cage lots and I'm not sure why??

Heats and Humidity: I have him at 55 percent at most time and sometimes drop to 45 percent. The top of his cage is around 86.9 degrees and the bottom of his cage is room temp (73.8 degrees)

Current problem: How and I doing? Smeegle occasionally with open his mouth shake and then close he does this every 3-5 days... Leave any feedback on what I am doing! I am willing to make any changes necessary for good health of my chameleon! Thanks!

What type of Bonsai tree do you have? Many types of plants can be turned into them... Bonsai is mostly about how they look when pruned a certain way.

Question: Does your cham eat out of your hand when you feed him crickets? Mine will not come near me when I try to feed him. He will wait for ages if he has to! I always have to put down the worm on a branch where he can see it and once my hand is out the cage he'll go for it immediately. He eats hornworms, waxworms, superworms, mealworms, etc. all the same way, just like that...

It's normal to find your cham near the top of the cage often. They like to be high off the floor most of the time.

Definitely a tough first pet!! But good job for doing your research and going the extra mile to find out everything you can about him. :)

Good luck!

Oh, and another note, superworms and mealworms (and some others) are freaking TERRIBLE climbers. It drives me insane when they fall to the floor... However, your cham will most likely go down to the bottom if he wants it. You can also find ways to keep them up higher like laying them on the branch a certain way or putting them on leaves. Just make sure your cham can see where you're putting it, otherwise it could take a long time for him to find it...

I put a Ficus Bonsai in one of my enclosures once , and with only one bite from my pet it killed my 4 month old veiled. I don't know if they are all poisonous but the one I used was. So I highly recommend you check it out with the safe to use plants list. Ficus and Ficus Bonsai are not the same plant.http://www.flchams.com/safe_plant_list.asp:) once you get to the link the list is in the column to the left you have to bring it up don't give the OOPS any mind.
