Housing!

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and am looking into getting a Panther chameleon.

Basically what i need to know at this moment is;

I have a 3foot vivarium which is housing my bearded dragon at the moment. He will be moving into his new 4foot with in a month.

Would it be possible to use my 3foot tank for a panther chameleon and what should i do to it to make it usable? (eg; cut the top out and put a metal mesh across the top?)

Any feed back would be great! if i can use this vivarium it will be a massive bonus as it will save me a lot of money set up wise!

Anyway let me know!

Peter

:eek: PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
Do not put a Panther Chameleon in a glass tank/terrarium... They need ventilation. And they need height. Get a screened cage. Or build one. Also, read the posts on this forum. You will find a wealth of information here...

Panther Chams are wonderful reptiles to keep, but they do have very specific requirements that will greatly affect their lives, for better or worse. Please do your due diligence (research) before jumping in!

BTW - Welcome!

Hanks for the reply!

The tank I'm talking about
is a wooden tank that i am more then happy to cut up to add ventilation via wire mesh.

I just wanted to know if the tank would be ok if I cut a hole in the top of the viv and cover it with the wiremesh or would I need more? Or even more would I need to turn it on it's side etc?

If I was rushing in I wouldn't b on this forum asking questions :)

I will do a browse of te forum but if anyone can give some more information on whether this tank is fine I would much appreciate it! (tank size is 3ft x 2ft x 2ft)

thanks again

It is ok for a small juvenile panther as long as you remove all the glass from the sides, however they are arboreal creatures and need height. You would have to take out all glass/plastic, not just cut a hole in it. If it is an adult panther, you are going to need an all screen cage measuring 2'X2'X4'!

Also no substrate.

well my plan was gonna be to use my wooden vivarium;

Iphonelatest114.jpg

This is my viv as it is at the moment minus my bearded dragon

and if i need extra height i was thinking of maybe building onto the top of the viv up to make it larger? or turning the viv on its side?

What do you think ? if its gonna be cheaper to just buy a vented one i might just do that instead. but i would like to utilise the equipment i already have if you know what i mean.

Btw i'm from the UK :)

Cheaper and better to just buy a proper enclosure. LLL and DIYCages has them fairly cheap.

You would have to make some major modifications that would degrade the structural integrity of the cage you have.
