Hi guys,
im just wondering lots of people talk about chams getting burnt, but never give the temp they burnt at. my basking spot is 30c but the mesh on the cage is 40c as he's only 5m panther he can still climb up there though it is a struggle for him now he's bigger. Would he burn if he sits on the mesh??

Also he like to be out sitting on my shoulder, I live in England surrey and worried he'll be to cold at room temperature about 20c-24c how long would he be ok at these temps for??

Please help im a new owner and getting very confused and worried! Xx

What kind of Cham do you have?

5 month old panther. Assuming the age is right, 30c is too warm for basking. It should not be any warmer then 28c in the basking spot. He can definitely get burned by 40c. Lowering your temp to 28c can be achieved by simply moving the lamp off the mesh an inch or so. This should lower the temp in the basking spot, as well as the mesh. There are several ways to move the lamp off the mesh. You can buy a clamp and clamp it to the side of the cage and position the light. I've also seen someone use paper clamps and clamping them to the dome to raise the light up. Let me see if I can go find the picture for you. It was a brilliant idea!

Well I was unable to find it, but here is a picture of the clamps she used. She clamped four or so to the some and then the chrome colored metal acted as "legs" to the dome. Like legs on a coffee table if that makes sense? Just brilliant! Hope this helps!

still confused!??

Its already off the mesh by about 2 inches, I cant put in on the thermostat or the bulb will blow apparently?? Its a 80w uv basking lamp. He has a branch just below that one and the temp is 26c.
the only way I can make it higher is swaping it to the frount and putting the uv hood to the back but that will mess up my dripper, even if I move it so the basking purch is 28 the screen will still be hotter or make it so the screen is 28? He struggerls to get up there, today is the first time ive seen him do it with this lamp?

Ok so where hes sitting now the nearist he can get to the bulb without being on the mesh is 28c but the mesh is 39c and my room is only 21 when its been up to 24c this week on sunny days ?? Aaaaaahhhhhh help!!!

Just get the basking spot to 28, He will stay off of the screen. You can try using a regular house bulb instead of the 80w. Try a 75 watt. If still too hot, go down to a 60 watt. Sorry about that confusion. I was assuming the light was sitting directly on the mesh.

stay calm :) As long as he can get away from the too high temps and to cooler spot, hes in no immediate danger.

::EDIT::

I see you have his basking temp good now. Don't worry about the screen temp. If he climbs on it he will recognize immediately its too hot and get right off. Hows your ambient temp? Is your room temp what your ambient temp is?

move around...

Ok Ivd had a move round the lamp is acros a bit now to a lower bit of branches temp on branch 28-29c not sure how accurate the gage is (trixie reptileland thermo-/hygrometer) I was going to get a better one next week. Anyway the mesh will still be at 39c ive not seen him go up there for weeks until today, he was there twise??? He also had a little stuck sperm plug (possible it had somthing to do with it, uncomfortable maybe) easily pulled out. gave him a warm shower and watched him drink (only second time ive seen this, though hes always hydrated) hope this will help with future plugs? Put in some more vines so he has more climbing choice, i was going to buy more branches as he getting much bigger now and can't climb about on just the leaves just waiting to be payed. he can definitely get away from the heat he's in a 90cm tall 60cm wide 45cm deep tank so he can climb right down away from the lamp and its alway cool down there near the damp soil :) he all dark and moody now been tinkering with the tank all day and he really enjoys the shower... would stay there all day I recon lol he'll be fine tomorrow.

Thank you so much for replying!

Any suggestions on being out of the tank hes climbing on his 5ft ficus at the moment my room is at 22.5c but can be from 19-25? He dosent seem to mind and always wants to stay out? ;)

I must be doing somthing right!?

Middle of the tank? Is that what you mean by ambient is 22c and the bottom is 19ish, not 100%sure what it is at night but its in my bedroom so not that cold the tank is pretty warm even at night with all the lights offf and no extra heating mats ect.

he often gose quite light/pale colours particularly when down stairs? I know they are all different but generally darker means stressed or absorbing heat. so whats lighter, excited? Too Cold? He's also very pale when he's asleep. I know it can mean very hot but he's definitely not that downstairs!!

Im not too worried ive had him 8 weeks or so, he growing about 1cm a week, eats a variety of gutloaded foods, getting hes colours nicely, shed once but dew one any day by the looks of him, putting on weight and hes poos look good, happy to be held by me and other people, I MUST BE DOING SOMTHING RIGHT! I work at a nursery school and more chilled with babies than him lol everyone ses its different when they are your own! Lol ;)
