Hornworm Breeding

This has inspired me to start breeding them. I have a few questions though. What temperature do you keep them at.? And on the small cage, do you just keep the moths in there and you keep the eggs and worms in a different container.? And can the moths be fed off.?

I keep them at room temp, no lights on them.

I plan to let the moths stay in the cage, and once eggs are laid, collect them, and remove them to a seperate bin. similar to what the pupae are in, but without the dirt.

I keep the worms in a seperate container, and once they get big and/or dirty looking, i put them in the cage to dig into the dirt to pupate.

and yes you can feed off the moths. :D

Awesome. Looks like when I get paid this is what I shall be buying. It'll probably save a lot of money. Ever made a post on silk worms.? I was thinking about trying them one day.

I havent. but thats my next project.
I have a thing from miss lily, you shoudl emial her and ask for it.
ps- i emailed you the cage stuff. :D

Okay. I wish crickets were easy to breed. Then I wouldn't have buy many bugs at all. Except butter worms and phoenix worms. Save a ton of money.

they are. mostly.

and i hate crickets righ tnow, i had to capture like 150 last night that got loos from my cricket bin.

Oh no! That's terrible.

I heard they were hard to breed.

It was not fun. at all.

and from what i plan to do,

get a small tub fill with damp dirt. make sure females can get inside said tub.

leave for a week, misting once a day.

remove tub of dirt.
place in new bin.

mist once a day, eggs should hatch.

feed, start over.

Thank you. :)
I would think after a certain amount of time of being fed the chow after eating a tomato plant, that they would no longer be toxic, just based on biology and digestion, but I cannot say for sure.

Are you talking about the chow that comes in the cup with them? cuz for me, thats always dark brown. and then when I feed them on my own, I use Mulberry farms silkworm chow. whcih when cooked, looks brownish/yellowish.

And I think I will make a blog of it. thanks for the idea.

I think you need the plant.
But you can buy seeds and grow one. it doesn thave to be huge.
Thats what im doing, you can get seeds off amazon.com (no joke) lol

Ha ha awesome well next pay check is going to this project. My girlfriend is going to hate me for this ha ha but it saves so much money. Any chance you have anything on Dubai?

Haha nice. yea its fairly easy to set up. and she cant hate you too much, just tell her green caterpillars and butterflies. (its not a lie, they are caterpillars, and they get wings!) haha.

and sorry I do not do roaches. and will never do roaches.

I breed/have
pheonix worms
butter worms
hornworms
silkworms
crickets
mantids
superworms

will not intentionally bring roaches in my house.

But I think drcrossfire and solid snake do roaches, as well as hoj I believe.

There has been threads recently regarding breeding dubia, a quick search will give you the answers you are looking for. If you think the hornworm breeding looks easy, dubia will be a breeze. :)

its always an accomplishment when you get the bugs to breed, since you dont have to spend as much money, or in my case, can actually make a profit when you sell babies.

y a i have roaches, they basically do themselves LoL.
and ya i get two different chows for my worms, i dont know what the yellow one is but i know the other is mullberry, ( i hate the smell of that stuff )

i think the yellow chow makes them teal colored isntead of just green.
at least thats what i read from the mulberry farms website.
and it smells horrible. i hate it. almost makes me want to buy a mini fridge to store it in its own place so i don thave to have it in my fridge with my food.
